Chapter 29 Corporate Social Responsibility Communication

Abstract
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has quickly become an established element of business life and spawned the vibrant field of CSR communication. CSR emphasizes how all stakeholders, not just those with a financial stake in an organization, are important to an organization and the need for managers to be cognizant of the relationship of their organization to society. We center the chapter on locating CSR communication within a web of connections with other areas of organizational communication including reputation management, internal communication, risk communication, issues management, and crisis communication. This context is important to understanding CSR communication’s role in an organization. From this context, we consider the utility of transmedia storytelling to CSR communication and identify future research directions for CSR communication. We argue the attention on future CSR communication should consider the movement away from focusing on businessrelated outcomes of CSR to societal and environmental outcomes. Future research should prioritize examining the social and environmental outcomes from CSR efforts and how to communicate this information to organizational stakeholders.
