Chapter 7 Leadership Communication

Abstract
This chapter reviews the history of leadership communication research from transmissional views of communication to post-truth. We adopt a meta-theoretical lens to analyze this wide and diverse literature based on how leadership has been studied. Specifically, normative approaches, with their post-positivist leanings, include trait theories, transformational leadership, leader-member exchange, moral and authentic leadership, and global leadership. Interpretive approaches emphasize performative and sociomaterial language games. They focus on leadership sensemaking/sensegiving, collective leadership, communicative constitution of organization approaches, and paradoxical leadership. Critical leadership infuses a power orientation into the performative aspects of leadership and followership; it includes poststructuralist approaches and leadership-followership dialectics that examine follower resistance. Finally, dialogical leadership approaches use leadership theory as a tool for praxis, focusing on leader-follower relationality and reflexivity, practical theory, and critical reflexivity. For each approach, we articulate its assumptions about communication, organizations, and leader-follower relations. We also undertake a selective review of the literature, highlighting important studies along the way, and point to important avenues for future research.
