Abstract

This article deals with the inner worldly and otherworldly use or abuse of gold in the second book of Maccabees. The “gold from heaven”, be it decoration for the celestial cavalry or be it weapons, appear mostly in situations that are life-threating for the Jews. Their main purposes are to encourage or protect the Temple, Judas and the righteous Jews as well as to threaten and to defeat the powerful Hellenistic opponents. The duration and number of heavenly figures relate to the degree of endangerment created by the enemies.
