Philosophical Ideas about Cosmos and Creation in the Book of Wisdom

Abstract
The Book of Wisdom belongs to the so-called rewritten-Bible literature of the late Second Temple Period but shows great skills in Greek-Hellenistic literary form and vocabulary. The paper discusses if there may also be a subtle philosophic approach underlying the book, dealing with three philosophic challenges appearing in Hellenistic times: Is God the transcendent Creator or part of his Creation? How is the coming-into-being of the cosmos to be conceptualized? How can God be perceived in his creation? The paper tries to show that the book of Wisdom is aware of these philosophical challenges and offers the somewhat traditional figure of Lady Wisdom, already mentioned in the traditional Hebrew writings, as an intermediary.
