Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Cosmos and Creation

Abstract

In the epitome of 2 Maccabees, the four epiphanies confirm that the cosmos is vulnerable to God’s intervention on behalf of observant Jews in the land of Israel. While these divine manifestations variously take place at the temple, over Jerusalem and on the battlefield, they combine to preserve from Hellenization “the holy city” whose uniqueness derives from its people’s adherence to the Torah. The epiphanies blend ancient Israelite depictions of YHWH as the commander of heavenly armies with Hellenistic portrayals of horses to illustrate the unique resources that empower Jews to safeguard their culture and land in the face of imperial invasion.
