Abstract
This chapter examines specialized communication within the field of journalism, focusing on the discursive practices journalists use to interact with and make sense of news in highly specialized fields – such as science, politics, and the arts – to both expert and general audiences. We argue that journalism involves a form of specialized communication as journalists interpret and mediate knowledge from professional domains for broader audiences. Drawing on a media linguistic perspective, we advocate for a production-oriented perspective and linguistic ethnographic approach to investigate the specialized nature of journalisms. We explore interpretive and descriptive journalism, news in times of crisis, and mediatization in relation to specialized journalism and apply them to a case study of collaborative journalism in the field of air quality. The analysis shows how emerging forms of collaboration impact the specialized nature of the communication involved as well as the boundaries between wide-ranging professional practices.
