Abstract

This chapter begins with an explanation of cohesion and coherence, and goes on to discuss different aspects of these in specialised written communication. Coherence in specialised texts is achieved through specific genres and information structures that are conventional within a discipline, match readers’ expectations, and fulfil certain information needs. This is illustrated by examples from scientific research writing and legal documents. The chapter then examines how cohesion is achieved at sentence, paragraph, and text level, using examples from the scientific and legal genres mentioned previously. The chapter ends with some brief conclusions and suggests how this brief analysis of cohesion and coherence might be extended in future research.
