27 Qualitative and quantitative text analysis
-
Noah Bubenhofer
Abstract
This chapter discusses the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods for text analysis in the field of specialized communication research. Corpus linguistics, which involves the use of computational linguistic tools to process and analyze large amounts of text, offers techniques to support various types of text analysis, including frequencies and distribution, associations and collocations, and distributional semantics. The chapter also discusses the use of manual annotation and machine learning, categorizing, and data-driven approaches as ways to combine quantitative and qualitative methods. Further, it addresses common problems associated with using quantitative methods alongside qualitative methods and the need to develop automatic methods of text analysis that can be read and interpreted.
