Abstract

This chapter gathers all the evidence for Phaedra from between the Odyssey and Sophocles, evidence largely neglected in modern scholarship. It goes on to investigate the consequences of some of that neglected evidence (namely Stesichorus) for the idea that the references to Athenian myth in the Odyssey imply an Athenian context for the early transmission, or even composition, of that poem, and argues that Athenian myth was becoming part of panhellenic mythology at an earlier stage than has traditionally been believed.
