Abstract

European-spanish prehistory and Greco-roman antiquity have been key aspects of scientific innovation in Spain during the interwar years before 1936. In this regard, German historians and archaeologists played an important role providing impulses not only for the specialized debate but as well for the broader discourse on culture and society. The present study examines this Spanish debate on antiquity by focusing on impulses of cultural transfer by the Revista de Occidente. First (II.), the present study delves into the »spectacular discovery« of a Tartessian early culture located on the Iberian Peninsula. Secondly (III.), key aspects on ancient Greek colonization and the Roman occupation of Spain until the late antiquity will be discussed. Finally (IV.), the results obtained will be summarized by highlighting their transformative effects on the Spanish discourse on culture and society
