Abstract

This article analyses the relationships between art and politics in Spain under the control of Franco’s army from 1938 to 1940 and focusses on artistic expression at the ceremonial events organised by the Visual Arts Department. This contribution examines some of the most important mass events during this period by exploring their representation spaces, staging, propaganda purpose and meaning. These aspects were related to mass celebrations organized by Italian Fascist and German National-Socialist regime. Those events were based on reclaiming and appropriating classical antiquity, especially ancient Imperial Rome. The aim of mass celebrations in Franco’s Spain was to associate the most glorious moments of the imperial past with what the regime called the “New State” and thus, to demonstrate its ideological legitimacy
