Abstract

The human being acting in the public sphere is in general what Aristotle called πολιτικὸν ζῷον. In this paper we shall lay out a rather general framework for understanding this fundamental property of the human being, drawing in various ways on his historical development. This scenario has important implications for political theory, for it suggests that human being is predisposed to sociability: human being is by nature a social animal that lives with others and can only achieve justice and the common good through dialogue and deliberation, since as Aristotle himself points out human being is the only ζῷον λόγον ἔχων. This implies that we can derive human beings’ political nature from their rhetorical nature
