Excavations in the North of Italy along the via Claudia Augusta
-
Patrizia Basso
Abstract
This paper presents the results of archaeological research carried out during 2014 and 2015 by the University of Verona in Gazzo Veronese, a small town on the Po Plain south of Verona. The excavation focused on the stretch of the via Claudia Augusta between Hostilia and Verona. It has allowed us to understand the technique of construction and the dating of the road. The road was built on an agger 10 metres wide, with a drainage ditch about 9 m wide and 1 m deep. Along it, a few tombs were built between the end of the first century B.C.E. and the beginning of the second century C.E. The original gravel surface was removed by agricultural works and dispersed across the surface of the surrounding fields, so that it was possible to follow the road through archaeological survey and to understand its course in relation to the geomorphology of the territory.
