Miliaria in der Provinz Lusitania
-
Michael Rathmann
Abstract
The article outlines the scope and content of the edition of the milestones of the Roman province of Lusitania planned as part of CIL XVII. So far, 266 milestones have been recorded in a database, collecting material that is currently scattered across numerous publications. This has shown certain peculiarities with regard to their time of origin, their distribution, and the imperial titulatures inscribed on them: There are no republican and relatively few late-antique examples; most of them are from the 1st and 2nd century. The inscriptions on the miliaria are consistently shorter than comparable texts from other provinces of the West; only rarely are cities epigraphically named as capita viae. Around 80% of the milestones come from one single road, the Camino de la Plata.
