Milestones near Roman Army Installations in Desert Areas of the Provinces of Palaestina and Arabia

Abstract
A general observation on milestones in the Roman province of Palaestina shows that in the northern and central part of the province some 650 milestones are known along the Roman road system, while in the southern part - the Negev Desert - they are very rare, even along well known and preserved Roman roads. I suggest that all the examples of milestones in the Negev Desert area including those along the incense route were an initiative and labor of local Roman Army units and are not part of the regular Roman road network connecting major cities. A similar phenomenon of erecting milestones near Roman military camps or forts rather than along the entire road is found also east of the Via Nova Triana in southern Jordan.
