The Peutinger Map, the Roman Army and the First Military Roads in Dacia
-
Florin-Gheorghe Fodorean
Abstract
Until the moment when Trajan conquered Dacia, the regions to the north of the Danube were basically unknown. This situation changed after the conquest of Dacia in 106 A.D. To understand the role of the Roman army in the geographical knowledge of the Dacian territories, the contribution tries to reveal the fact that the very first roads built in Dacia were the military lines used by the Roman army during the Dacian conquest. These roads were afterwards depicted in the Peutinger map.
