Abstract

My paper examines the extraordinary lives and legacies of two German-born classicists, Eva Lehmann Fiesel (1891-1937) and her daughter Ruth Erika Fiesel (1921-1994), both warmly welcomed here in the United States as refugees from the Nazis and their “race laws” in 1934. Its choice of topic pays tribute to the professional and personal accomplishments of Christiane Reitz, Professor of Latin at the University of Rostock. A pioneering and much-admired scholar, she has helped transform the profession of Classics in Germany since the country’s reunification in 1990. She is also the mother of classicist Bettina Reitz-Joosse, who was educated abroad in the UK and the Netherlands, and now occupies a professorial position at the University of Groningen.
