Abstract

Columella’s De re rustica is at the center of a new article by Christiane Reitz, where she establishes a conceptual equivalence between the practicality exuding from the treatise as a whole and the specific discourse of Book 10, which she interprets as Columella’s poetological program. In this paper I further develop the path opened up by her inspiring essay, complementing and expanding it with some considerations deriving from a different perspective. In particular, my reading strategy will leave aside the discussion both of Columella’s intentions and intended readership and of his literary models and sources, in order to focus instead on the specific textuality of Book 10 of his agricultural treatise. The most interesting aspects are the themes of exclusion and segregation as well as a process of miniaturization of the whole treatise.
