Abstract

This paper explores the question of whether there is a formal correspondence between the meter and the content of the individual odes in Book 1 of Horace’s Carmina. It is not the aim of this analysis to identify a specific pattern of composition but to examine if and to what extent odes in the same meter contain references to one another. The following three types of references can be identified in Horace’s first book of the Odes: 1) Horace is inspired by the reminiscence of political events, his private life, or a reading experience to rely on the same meter again when taking up a theme, motif, or train of thought that he already used in an earlier poem. 2) Horace may have favoured a particular meter during certain stages of his creative process, i.e. he composed odes he wrote in quick succession in the same meter. 3) Horace deliberately chooses the same meter for a poem to highlight its reference to an already existing ode whose mood and statements he adjusts or approaches from a different perspective. The study shows that Horace uses meter as a means to establish a striking connection between individual poems and repeatedly redirect the reader to a different ode in the book thereby strengthening its cohesion.
