Abstract

A characteristic feature of Flavian epic is the way it modifies, or rather alters, traditional epic values. The epic hero Tydeus is undoubtedly one of the best warriors of the Iliad. However, the way he dies, known to us from scholia and the mythographic tradition, may sound outrageous: he requests his enemy’s head and eats it. Statius’ Thebaid stages this tension between Tydeus’ heroism and his infamous behaviour by resorting to multiple viewpoints and internal focalisation. Moreover, the same dramatic tension and ambivalence as in the Thebaid’s portrayal of gloria and uirtus pervades the whole epic turning Tydeus into an emblematic figure of Flavian literary and moral questioning of the epic genre and its heroes.
