Apocalipsis Pauli/Visio Pauli – Warum eigentlich Paulus?

Abstract
Why Paul? This guiding question is not easy to answer for the Apocalypse of Paul/Visio Pauli. In this study, all relevant passages that explicitly mention Paul and provide attributes for him are examined, and the potential references to 2 Cor 12:1-5 in the apocryphal apocalypse are also critically assessed. Subsequently, the Apocalypse of Paul/Visio Pauli is interpreted in light of other apocalypses that scholars often mention in regard to interrelations and dependencies, similar motives, and genre. Two conclusions follow from this study: on the one hand, Paul is not a unique or an absolutely necessary protagonist in the Apocalypse of Paul/Visio Pauli. On the other hand, Paul’s attributes qualify him much more closely and significantly than the main characters in parallel apocalypses. These conclusions answer the following question: for the author of the text (and possibly the audience), Paul is the representative and mediator of an extraordinary privilege offered by God, namely to see the otherworld, to be received with honor and respect by main authorities of the Old and New Testaments, and to return back in order to report about everything he saw.
