English Abstract

This essay is based on the opening lecture at the Geneva conference. It argues that in order to understand the apostleship of Paul, we need to reflect on his self-concept. As the reference to “apostleship” is unclear in its implications, the Pauline self-concept is developed from the decisive aspects of his life and ministry. The little we know the details of Paul’s life, we are at least able to characterize him as a diaspora Israelite, educated in Jewish law and tradition, as one who converted to belief in Jesus, yet never stopped to be a faithful Jew in his mind, as an enthusiastic missionary and, on top, as one who understood himself as an eschatological instrument of God’s eschatological salvation. By preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, Paul acts - metaphorically in cultic terms - as a minister (λειτουργός) of Christ offering the Gentiles as a sacrifice (προ- σφορά) to the sphere of God and thus lead them to holiness. In the discussion of the reception of Paul in later texts, we can ask which aspects of his self-concept are adopted and which aspects are ignored.
