Abstract

Allusions to and quotations of Pauline Letters and deutero-Pauline Letters are examined in second-century Gnostic sources. Among the Valentinians, fragments of Valentinus are compared with extracts of his disciples (Theodotus, Mark, and Ptolemy). The Nag Hammadi Codices (for example, Codex I) confirm that undisputed and deutero-Pauline Letters were read and very much appreciated among Valentinians. Meanwhile, the Basilidian Gnostics quote less from Paul, and Basilidian texts from Nag Hammadi (VII.2-3) use Paul to criticize the Christology and the baptismal rites of their adversaries.
