Abstract

Matthew’s Gospel and the Epistle of James are typically considered as close relatives. This article examines whether their affinities also imply a similar relationship to Paul or Pauline tradition. The epistle of James is usually classified as anti-Pauline. In recent research, some have postulated an anti-Pauline orientation for Matthew’s Gospel too. Contrary to these approaches, this article questions the (implicit) premises of “pan-Pauline” tendencies in mapping emerging Christianity and argues that neither the epistle of James nor the Gospel of Matthew is directed against Paul. Rather, both James and Matthew are witnesses to a non-Pauline branch of emerging Christianity.
