Abstract

This essay studies the influence and use of material from Paul’s letters in 1 Clement’s efforts to intervene in the troubles at Corinth, and the reasons for using this strategy. It does not offer a full survey of all possible traces from Paul’s letters, but concentrates on three types of material: explicit references to Paul the apostle, references to the apostles as a body, and a selection of four passages in which 1 Clement may have borrowed more extensively from Paul. It is argued that 1 Clement never cites Paul directly or verbally but always offers “his version,” because he wishes to adapt the model to the situation he is dealing with. Thus, 1 Clement is a case of “using” rather than “citing” Paul for a purpose that is not alien to his dealings with Christian communities, but is not strictly bound to Paul’s positions in all respects.
