Abstract

The article delivers an outline of key references to rhetoric and rhetoricity in the diverse field of feminist philosophy and gender theory. Starting from the observation that in this area of research, references to rhetoric are primarily made to rethink the concept and meaning of the body and of the embodied speaking subject, the article explores and unravels exemplary constellations of the relationship between corporality and rhetoric. After some preliminary remarks on the status of rhetoric in gender theory in general, the predominant theoretical edifices of Luce Irigaray, Shoshana Felman and Judith Butler are scrutinized. It is intended to show how rhetoric is put to use by these efficacious accounts that aim to undo the strict dichotomic separation of materiality and language, without thereby reducing bodily materiality to a mere game of linguistic differences. Rather, rhetoric is employed to analyze, criticize and transform the symbolic, social and political dispositives by which gendered bodies enter the realm of social representation and intelligibility. Thereby, rhetoric is conceived as a canon of figures and tropes, as a compendium for different techniques of speech and public appearance as well as a tool for critical reading. Remarkably, rhetoric furthermore appears to be object and instrument of political critique at the same time, being itself thoroughly transformed through the processes of gender-theoretical rearticulations.
