13. Pragmatismus und Pragmatik: Rhetorische Spuren in Theorien sprachlichen Handelns

Abstract
The article discusses continuities between classical rhetoric, American pragmatism, and Pragmatics. All three are based on the primacy of practice over theory and criticize absoluteness claims of reason raised by rationalist philosophers. In particular, there is a close affinity between the rhetorical concept of speech and Peirce’s semiotics, which can be read as a complex theory of the efficiency and agency of signs. Peirce develops a discipline called ‘speculative rhetoric’ which he regards as the highest form of semiotics. Habermas’ theory of communicative action or formal pragmatics can be seen as an approach to understand the agency of words and signs, too. But unlike Peirce the use of signs in Habermas is preceded by a transcendental doctrine of validity claims that govern the ever concrete sign use.
