14. Analytische Philosophie: Die andere Seite der Rhetorik

Abstract
During its 100 year old history, analytical philosophy has established a self-image, directing itself against any rhetorical momentum in philosophy. The article situates this self-image historically. In doing so, tensions between the “official” self-image and the subsequent developments of this tradition become apparent. Analytical philosophy has been always claiming to link clarity and objectivity in a methodical exemplary manner. Due to its significance, this claim was succinctly problematized, resulting in strong fallibilistic and practice oriented positions which definitely comply with a rhetorically oriented concept of speech. Thereby, analytical philosophy appears as an anti-rhetorical tradition which defends a scientific ideal of reason in the reason-skeptical 20th century, while at the same time resorting to a rhetoric of objectivity.
