Abstract

Hans-Georg Geyer and Bruce McCormack have each presented impressive post-Barthian kenotic drafts. Each in their own way continues Barth’s Christology and both, based on Barth’s view of election as ‚primal decision,‘ take up his legacy. However, while Geyer’s kenotic definition of Christology emphasizes the Father-Son relation, McCormack focuses on the relationship between the logos and the human being. Geyer thereby understands kenosis mediated through the motif of surrender and obedience as an enactment of sonship, while McCormack, with his reversal of the line of vision away from the logos and toward the human Jesus, conceives of kenosis not as an enactment of a logos externalizing its divinity but as receptivity to the human acting in the power of the Spirit. Geyer’s kenotic Christology proves to be staurocentrically pointed, McCormack’s as incarnation theologically contoured.
