The International Journal of Materials Research (IJMR) publishes original, experimental and theoretical papers on basic and applied research in the field of materials science and engineering, with a focus on synthesis, processing, constitution and properties of all classes of materials, including hybrid and biomaterials. Comprehensive reviews are also welcome. Particular emphasis is placed on a scientific understanding of the microstructure–property relationship. Thus, experimental or computational studies on thermodynamics and kinetics as well as knowledge-based materials design are of primary interest. Contributions may also focus on progress in advanced characterization techniques.

All papers are peer-reviewed.

Pore evolution and mechanical properties of carbon fiber laminates subjected to low-velocity impacts

In order to study the effect of impact loading on the porosity within carbon fiber laminates and the effect of porosity on performance under external loading, six different energy gradients (0 J, 6 J, 10 J, 15 J, 20 J, 25 J) were applied to impact the carbon fiber laminates, followed by tensile and compression experiments on the impacted laminates. Various characterization methods, including industrial CT, ultrasonic C-scan, metallographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury intrusion porosimetry, were used to investigate the changes in porosity and their effects on mechanical properties. The study found that impact loading leads to the formation of new porosity between layers, and these pores connect through cracks and coalesce to form larger pores, ultimately resulting in delamination. Under tensile loading, cracks form near the interlaminar and intralaminar porosity, and propagate along the thickness direction and interlaminar direction, respectively, leading to a decrease in the mechanical properties of the laminate. Using ultrasonic A-scan technology, sound attenuation and sound impedance data for the impacted regions of the laminates were obtained, and mathematical models for sound attenuation, sound impedance, and porosity were established. The average errors of the models were 6.6 % and 5.5 %, respectively. Additionally, finite element simulations of the laminate’s impact and tensile experiments were conducted, and tensile strength values for the 0 J, 10 J, and 20 J samples were output. The simulation results showed an accuracy rate of 95.4 %, 97.2 %, and 95.2 %, respectively.

Durian seed-derived gold nanoparticles: sustainable anticancer and catalytic applications from agricultural waste

Agricultural waste contributes to escalating environmental pressures but also represents a valuable, renewable source for sustainable nanomaterial production. In this study, durian seed extract (DurSE), obtained from the often-discarded seeds of Durio zibethinus , was utilized as a natural reducing and capping agent for the green synthesis of multifunctional gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The biosynthesis process was systematically optimized by varying key parameters, with the most favorable conditions identified as 4 °C reaction temperature, 3 mL extract volume, and 1 mM HAuCl 4 ·3H 2 O concentration. Structural and physicochemical characterizations of the resulting DurSE–AuNPs were performed using Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, confirming particle stability, functional group involvement, and crystalline nature. Biocompatibility and therapeutic potential were assessed in-vitro against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, where the nanoparticles significantly reduced cell viability to 31 % at a concentration of 32 μg mL −1 . Furthermore, the DurSE–AuNPs demonstrated excellent catalytic activity, achieving complete reduction of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange dyes within 3 min and 15 min, respectively. These results highlight the dual biomedical and environmental potential of agricultural waste-derived nanomaterials, offering a sustainable route for producing high-value, multifunctional nanoparticles.

Mechanical and thermal characterization of cuscuta stem fiber-reinforced biodegradable polymer composites

Thoroughly investigating the potential applications of Cuscuta stem (CS) fibers in natural composites is essential for advancing the production of eco-friendly, lightweight biomass materials and functional products. Natural plant fibers are being investigated as potential replacements for artificial fibers in composite materials. In this work, Cuscuta stem fiber was tested to determine its physicochemical parameters, thermal behaviour, and other associated aspects. Examining the chemical composition of CS fiber revealed a high proportion of cellulose (66.8 %), lignin (9.25 %), and hemicellulose (12.8 %), with minor quantities of wax (0.26 %) and ash (4.11 %). Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction analysis indicates a crystallinity index of 82.7 % and a crystalline size of 7.29 nm in CS the fiber. The thermal characteristics of CS fiber were assessed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The outcomes confirmed thermal permanency up to 220 °C and deterioration at 350 °C, indicating potential for polymer composite production. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the average diameter of the CS fiber was 460 µm.

The advancement of nanotechnology has led to the exploration of environmentally sustainable methodologies for nanoparticle synthesis, particularly emphasizing the significance of green chemistry. Among these, the green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using natural extracts has gained attention with respect to their potential biomedical applications. This study presents a novel method for the green synthesis of AuNPs employing CPH extract, which is sustainable and environmental-friendly. The synthesized CPH–AuNPs exhibited remarkable stability as evident from different characterization techniques, including UV–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. These analyses revealed that the CPH–AuNPs were predominantly homogeneous, spherical shaped with an average particle size and crystallite size of 16 nm and 17 nm, respectively. UV–Vis spectroscopy confirmed successful synthesis of CPH–AuNPs, with absorption peak stabilizing at 533 nm. TEM technique further confirmed the long–term stability feature of the synthesized nanoparticles. Additionally, the biosafety of CPH–AuNPs assessed using brine shrimp ( Artemia salina ) hatching assay, revealed 47 % hatching rate at the least concentration of 62.5 µg mL −1 , thereby underscoring their high biocompatibility. This research paves the way for the development of novel AuNPs synthesized using isolated polyphenols from CPH extract, with promising implications for their application in the biomedical field.

This study investigates the influence of Ni and NiAu coatings on hydrogen binding behavior in Al-based SiC composites, critical for aerospace and electronic applications. Theoretical computations reveal distinct hydrogen migration patterns at Al/SiC, Ni/SiC, Ni/Al, and Ni/Au interfaces. Nickel plating directs hydrogen towards the coating, reducing accumulation at the SiC/Al interface. However, NiAu plating leads to hydrogen enrichment at the Ni/Au interface, necessitating dehydrogenation of the Ni layer prior to Au plating. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for optimizing manufacturing processes and enhancing material reliability, durability, and performance in hydrogen-sensitive environments.

Synthesis and characterization of carbon quantum dots obtained from the pyrolysis of the cocoa bean husk and its impregnation in electrocatalysts based on Ti and Pt

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are nanomaterials characterized by their optoelectronic properties, their fluorescent activity and their good electrical conductivity. In addition, due to their small size of between 1 and 10 nm, they can form mesoporous surfaces when impregnated in thin films of interest. These characteristics are why they were synthesized in this research, to help enhance electrochemical properties. For this, agro-industrial waste was used. In this research, we worked with cocoa bean husks (CBH), a biomass rich in lignocellulose. The biomass was subjected to pyrolysis at 350 °C for 6 h, from which a biochar was obtained that was subjected to ultrasonic exfoliation where the CQDs were finally obtained. Morphological characterizations were made using scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic characterizations using energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy. The results give a yield of 4.32 ± 0.08 % in a synthesis that can be considered green, considering that no polluting or expensive reagents were used, since agro-industrial waste or residues and water was used as a solvent. High resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging allowed a size of 2.6 ± 0.7 nm of the CQDs to be obtained, consistent with the blue–violet fluorescence that shows the nanoparticles in solution. This was also observed in fluorescence spectroscopy where the emission range is 408–450 nm. When the CQDs were impregnated in Ti and Pt-based electrocatalysts, they were shown to enhance their electrochemical response. This confirmed the hypothesis regarding the improvement of electrical and morphological properties to improve electrocatalytic reactions such as oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen adsorption and desorption.

High performance of synergistic reinforced natural rubber with kewda fiber (Pandanus odoratissimus) and carbon black: thermal, morphological and statistically optimized mechanical studies

This work describes the preparation of kewda fiber and carbon black reinforced natural rubber composites by the milling process. The alkali-treated fiber is incorporated in the rubber matrix as 0, 1, 3, and 5 per hundred rubber with varying amounts of carbon black 0, 10, and 15 phr. Response surface methodology was used to examine the optimum tensile (20.83 MPa) and tear strength (56.00 N mm −1 ) along with elongation at break (2,546 %) at the corresponding composition of 1.50 phr of fiber and 8.94 phr of carbon black, which are higher than that of the neat sample, 12.71 MPa and 24.56 N mm −1 . Tensile strength was diminished from 20.83 MPa to 13.19 MPa as the fiber amount was increased beyond 1 phr up to 5 phr. Likewise, the addition of carbon black beyond 10 per hundred rubber causes a decrease in mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to study the morphology and inter-component interactions of composites. The thermal stability of the composites was improved from 320 °C to 335 °C and the maximum weight loss occurs at a higher temperature with the addition of carbon black. Thus, the reinforcement of fiber and carbon black in the rubber matrix improved the mechanical and thermal properties of the final material.

Mechanical and corrosion characterization of aluminium 6063 composite reinforced with teak wood saw ash

Aluminium alloy is valued for its recyclability, lightweight, and strength, making it ideal for architectural and vehicle applications, while metal matrix composites further enhance its performance. Teak wood resists decay and insects, making it a durable choice for outdoor furniture and construction. Its high tensile strength allows it to support heavy loads, making it suitable for demanding structural applications. This study investigates the use of the stir casting method to reinforce Al6063 alloy with the teak wood ash powder in varying proportions (2 %, 4 %, and 6 %). Mechanical characterizations were performed including tensile, compression and hardness tests along with a 96-h immersion corrosion test in NaCl solution to determine corrosion rates. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy were utilized to examine surface morphology and tensile fractography. Among the different proportions, the sample with 2 % reinforcement exhibited the best tensile property of 175 MPa, while the 4 % reinforcement sample showed the highest compression strength of 466 MPa. Micro-CT analysis of porosity revealed that the 2 % reinforced composite exhibited the lowest porosity percentage, measuring 0.45 %, in comparison to the other reinforcement proportions. The corrosion test results revealed that the 2 % reinforcement sample had the lowest corrosion rate at approximately 2.313 × 10 −4 (mm/y), whereas the 6 % reinforcement sample had the highest corrosion rate at about 3.161 × 10 −3 (mm/y). The modifications in Al6063 with teak wood ash powder lead to grain refinement and the creation of a more consistent and tightly packed microstructure, leading to superior strength.

Friction and wear behaviour of habara fiber reinforced epoxy composites

The environment friendly attribute of natural fibrils is the key factor for the demand raised to solve the problems associated with synthetic fibers. This article shows the potential of Habara fibril towards potential reinforcement material with isopthalic polyester resin. Convention water-based retting is adopted for preparation and extraction of Habara fibers. Habara fibrils were etched to remove surface contaminants present in the fiber with 5 % wt/vol of NaOH solution for 1 h. The composites were fabricated using cylindrical test tubes by maintaining a volume fraction of 25/75 wt.% of habara fiber and polyester. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared characterizations revealed the increase in crystal size of 29 % between untreated and treated Habara fiber and elimination of vital amorphous substance present in Habara fibers. Tribometry study revealed an increase in wear rate of the composites at higher load of 30 N and decrease in friction coefficient. A higher wear rate of 4.79 × 10 −6  mm 3  N −1  m −1 and friction coefficient of 0.28 was recorded. The development of thermal stress accounted for decrease in friction coefficient at higher load. Further shearing action resulted in detachment of fibers from the matrix. Fiber breakage and peel off accounts for increase in wear rate at higher load conditions. The morphological analysis revealed the elimination of amorphous substance remaining in the Habara fibers.
