Abstract

Academic libraries leverage emerging technologies to bring value through special services at universities to support research, teaching, and learning in innovative ways. Digital preservation and publishing support are two innovative services that promote the curation of digital heritage using digital humanities approaches and Open Access publishing models. Digital Publishing Support (DPS) overseen by the Digital Initiatives librarian at the University of Toledo Libraries has evolved from a combination of approaches including knowledge management techniques and collaborative work. This case study reflects on a decade of experiences with a DPS initiative at the University of Toledo Libraries and focuses on service design, sustainability, and value. It presents a historical background followed by DPS Service design–a framework incorporating library publishing, open access, digital preservation, digital humanities and knowledge management. Critical considerations for continuation include balancing value and sustainability despite the lack of robust IT support and formal departmental assessment of the DPS initiative, which present challenges to sustainability. Value has been demonstrated in the form of support to several professional journal publishing activities and scholarly work of students utilizing the digital repository and the Open Journal System. Incorporating DPS into strategic planning conversations would necessitate future assessments. Linking DPS to strategic interests of the university would thus demonstrate value and provide rationale for sustaining it and soliciting greater institutional support in the long term.
