Chapter 14 Beyond individualism: A multilevel approach to the Inner Development Goals

Abstract
In this chapter, we offer a multilevel relational approach to the practice of the Inner Development Goals (IDGs). Our inner lives span wider than the bounds of our own minds and bodies: inner experiences are interdependent with others and the world, and there are important benefits to transcending an individualistic account of IDGs. Here we aim to give a rigorous multidisciplinary conceptualization and delineate a praxis to embody and enact a spectrum of selfhood, from the small parts of our inner experiences all the way to the emergence of our social-political identities – from neurons to nations. Such a methodology could help to dissolve boundaries between the inner life and connecting with others, and mutually reinforce the benefits of inner practice and worldly engagement. We provide insights from anthropology, contemplative traditions, philosophy, and contemporary sciences to describe the ways in which our sense of individual and collective self can be built and supported, supplemented by short exercises to encourage the embodiment of these conceptions. In order to get a practical felt sense of this nested spectrum of self-building, we propose a social somatics approach to sense and feel into the embodied experiences of how our sense of self arises together within ourselves, with others, and the world. This relational, multilevel reflexivity generalizes relational well-being at different scales, and we offer detailed practice descriptions and a case study to exemplify this reflexive praxis. Finally, we highlight applications in the corporate sector and possible pathways for development of these skills for team leaders, activists, politicians, and contemplatives.
