Chapter 12 Systems Leadership: An inner and outer journey in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest
-
Ariolino Andrade Azevedo
Abstract
Through an immersive experience in the different realities that coexist in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, a group of family businesspeople could experience emotional, relational, and systemic skills that allowed participants to challenge themselves for a more powerful, creative, and conscious action, aligned with contemporary challenges. During the one-week journey, the group deeply experienced inner skills for greater connection with oneself, with one another, and with the greater system of which they are part, as an invitation and a path to greater well-being, interconnectedness, and sense of purpose. The methodological structure of the FBN Learning Journey Amazônia was inspired by the Family Business Network (FBN) core values, the Inner Development Goals (IDGs), other systemic approaches such as Theory U, and the facilitators’ joint multidisciplinary repertoire of more than 20 years’ experience in facilitating learning and transformative journeys for corporate audiences in Brazil, both in corporate and natural settings. This chapter presents how the IDGs served as a conceptual and inspirational guide for designing and facilitating the journey, the lessons learned during and after the experience, and the potential immediate impacts of such an endeavor, including individuals better prepared to deal with complexity and uncertainty, increased self-awareness and perspective taking, strengthened notion of interdependence and systemic thinking, improvement in the quality of relationships for the articulation of collaborative environments, and a greater sense of purpose, well-being, and belonging to the human community.
