Abstract
Current research on the embodiment of cognition has outlined the importance of Gadamer’s hermeneutics for the formation of embodiment theory. By situating human cognition within culture, Gadamer has provided an influential background concept for theories of embodied cognition. While Gadamer’s contribution is generally considered important, some researchers have claimed its application is limited to cultural hermeneutics, since Gadamer disregards the bodily dimension of cognition. This paper demonstrates why this verdict needs to be partially revised. Since 1970, Gadamer has highlighted the issues of psychosomatics and psychopathology. In his work addressing these issues, Gadamer develops an innovative approach to the subject of embodiment and anticipates some aspects of the contemporary debate about embodied cognition.
