Fragestellungen zur Interaktion von Sprachwandel und Sprachvarietäten

Abstract
In this paper we will briefly sketch traditional efforts describing so called variations, varieties and their demarcation towards classifications like style, standard, and norm. Pros and cons of varieties will be discussed taking youth language as an example. Furthermore, we will take first steps in showing that instead of varieties which are formally separated from each other an interaction of varieties can be assumed. Ultimately, these considerations lead to a description of the interactive structure of language. They also give reason to propose various questions such as: how can this interaction be modelled, are there limits to this interaction and if so, where are they to be found; can certain universal characteristics and/or patterns be recognized, etc. In my conclusion, I will argue in favour of an approach that tries to avoid the introduction of artificial lines of demarcation in our language; I will not emphasize the differences of the various approaches in current research but rather speak in favour of a way which can integrate and bridge the gaps of controversial scientific approaches. I will recommend an approach which focuses on the basic questions concerning the interaction of language change and language varieties and which should be the target of further linguistic research.
