Undoing Youth – Dialect Levelling and Restandardisation in Urban Vernaculars in Austria

Abstract

Based on preliminary results of the recent research project “Youth Languages in Austria”, the present paper will give a first insight into one observed tendency in informal communication among adolescents in urban areas which is titled here as “Undoing Youth”. It will be shown that the phenomenon of “Undoing Youth” is especially realised by avoiding salient linguistic markers, on the one hand, and by using specific socio-symbolic markers, on the other, which - all in all - cause a positive reinforcement of the morphopragmatic indexicality. This thesis will be scrutinised by examining selected phonological/ morphological phenomena of urban adolescent vernaculars. Considering the assumption of an internal multilingualism (cf. Wandruszka 1979), I will argue that specific markers of different varieties on the dialect-standard-axis are merging and, therefore, lead to the supposition of a changing linguistic space that can be described as a continuum somewhere in between the intended standard and the dialect rather than as a space marked by distinctive varieties.
