On Hungarian Slang. Changing Functions and Attitudes

Abstract
The article deals with specific linguistic and social questions of a spreading phenomenon of present-day Hungarian language use: 1) what linguistic attitudes do the members of the coming generations, the adults of the forthcoming decades have towards slang that has been playing various roles recently and is constantly changing concerning not only its vocabulary but its status and style? 2) What effects does slang have on the grown-ups surrounding these young ones and on the linguistic mentality of the Hungarian speech community and vice versa? 3) What linguistic and social changes stand in the background of all these issues? The research is based on objective and subjective data collected via various methods from the youth, but the opinions of countrymen and older language users are also included. Slang is traditionally defined by listing its functions, and current research explores the alteration of these functions and the external reasons of the linguistic change, and it suggests that slang, appearing in formal language usage, reveals by no means linguistic and/or communicative incompetence of the youth but it is a consequence of the changing mentality of a changing society. It argues that pedagogical practice related to slang would be worth reconsidering.
