Tobacco tissues (Nicotiana tabacum var. “Samsun”) were cultivated in liquid media to which steril filtered TMV vulgare preparation was added. The cultures were grown in flasks on a rotary shaker with and without added abrasives. Growth and virus activity were measured after six weeks by inoculating the homogenized tissue on “Xanthi”-tobacco plants. Only part of the tissues became virus infected under these conditions. It is probable that infection of the tissues occurred only after mechanical wounding of the cells in the cultures.
