λ-phage inactivated by UV irradiation has been studied with respect to the following properties: adsorption, injection of DNA, lysogenisation, and the ability of several genes (h, d14, i1, i2) to express their functions. Only adsorption and DNA-injection are not influenced by the UV-lesions. This fact is in some disagreement with observations obtained with T2. One possible explanation is discussed: It is found that, as a function of the UV-dose, an increasing part of the DNA of irradiated λ is broken down in the host cell and eliminated. A new property of irradiated λ is described which consists in establisment of double lysogeny in cooperation with an already existing λ-prophage.
