God is always experienced in the mode of representations. The fundamental representation of God is Jesus Christ, the true image of God. In order to specify this designation further, with reference to all of humanity, it is suggested that the basic features of such representation can be identified in the features of desire and vulnerability, as manifestations of interconnectedness and dependence. These features are not only expressing themselves as that with which humans need to come to terms, but they also manifest the deeply relational character of humanity and its internal connection to goodness. They also make it possible to specify further how God and the human being are intrinsically connected, and make it possible to see why love is so important in the realization of imago Dei : It is love that secures that both desire and vulnerability can contribute to human flourishing, and thus precludes sin from manifesting itself.

In the Lutheran tradition, the particular aspects of theological ethics have often been overlooked, if not outright denied. Thus, it is not uncommon for Lutheran theologians to emphasize the universal aspects of theological ethics and to downplay its particular aspects, even to the point of arguing that a Christian ethics does not exist. Against this background, the article gives several arguments for drawing Lutheran ethics in a direction that will allow its particular aspects to be more clearly articulated. It also presents certain features of Luther’s ethical position that might foster an understanding of the particular aspects of Lutheran ethics. Building on this, the article points to a contemporary Lutheran position of relevance to a pluralistic society.

In this article, we will use contemporary analytic tools to make sense of the main arguments in the classic debate on free will between Erasmus of Rotterdam and the Reformer Martin Luther. Instead of offering another exegesis of these texts, we put forward an analysis that links this historical debate with contemporary discussions on free will and grace in philosophical theology. We argue that the debate was ultimately about how three theological core claims are related to one another: the Anti-Pelagian Constraint (humans are incapable of willing any good, in order to come to faith), the Responsibility Principle (humans are morally responsible in the eyes of God) and human free will. Erasmus attacks Luther by arguing that the Responsibility Principle cannot be maintained without free will, while Luther responds by arguing that Erasmus must reject free will, because it is in conflict with the Anti-Pelagian Constraint. Luther is then left with the dilemma of justifying the Responsibility Principle without free will – a task, which in our estimation, fails. In the concluding section of the article, we point out some continuities and discontinuities between the contemporary debate and that of Luther and Erasmus.

Modern psychiatry has arguably been taken captive by the philosophical presuppositions of modernity to the extent that its descriptions of mental illness appear unstable and susceptible to misuse. Foucault pointed to Nicholas Cusanus as a possible alternative, and this suggestion is here taken as the point of departure for an investigation of how the understanding of the human as informed by the encounter with the eternal points us in the direction of a different understanding of reality. Kierkegaard stands in the same Neoplatonic tradition as Cusanus, but takes his approach one step further by investigating the psychopathology of disbelief through his work with anxiety and despair. The article argues that psychiatry has much to learn from a deeper engagement with this tradition.

Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag widmet sich den bedeutsamsten theoretischen Stufen in der Vorgeschichte der Religionspsychologie in Deutschland, die sich im Laufe des langen 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte. Die unterschiedlichen Skizzen und Projekte der psychologischen Forschung auf religiösem Gebiet wurden damals vor allem im theologischen Milieu entworfen. Die Haupttendenzen ihrer konzeptuellen Entwicklung können anhand der Bedeutungsveränderung der ‚Stichwörter‘ wie [religiöse] Erfahrung, Selbstbeobachtung und Wert nachverfolgt werden. Von Anfang an zielten Philosophen wie J. Fries und Theologen wie Chr. Weisse auf größtmögliche Exaktheit und Strenge der zu erarbeitenden Methode. Sie setzten dabei ihre Hoffnungen in die Selbstbeobachtung, aber der Einfluss W. Wundts ließ Zweifel daran aufkommen. Deshalb glaubten manche Theologen ab den 1890er Jahren, die unvermeidlichen Nachteile der Introspektion durch die Anwendung der interaktiven bzw. instrumentalen Methoden der psychologischen Untersuchung aufheben zu können. Außerdem waren die deutschen religionspsychologischen Entwürfe des 19. Jahrhunderts stark axiologisch orientiert: Es handelte sich um die Wertgefühle bzw. Werturteile (d. h. weltanschaulich bzw. doktrinell gefärbtes affektives Fürwahrhalten) als wesentlichster Bestandteil der Religiosität überhaupt. Diese Tendenz schwächte sich zum Ende des langen 19. Jahrhunderts ab.

The interpretation of Richard Wagner’s music drama Parsifal has been one of the most philosophically and theologically controversial. Over the years various interpretations have been given, among them Buddhist, Schopenhauer-ian, anti-semite, and Christian. In this paper, I argue that this music drama is fundamentally a Christian work. I begin by discussing some methodological and background historical issues. I consider difficulties concerning bias in interpretation and the complicated intellectual life of Wagner, and propose to overcome these difficulties by testing various interpretations by their consistency with various parts of the music drama, and to interpret the statements of this music drama within that context. I then argue that Parsifal reflects the soteriological concepts of sola gratia , sola fide and solus Christus that are unique to Christianity but inconsistent with other interpretations. Finally, I address various objections to my Christian interpretation.

Zusammenfassung Eschatologische Vorstellungen, wie sie seit jeher Bestandteil christlicher Glaubenswelten waren, sind in der Moderne in eine tiefe Krise geraten. Im Zuge des Wandels des Welt- und Geschichtsbildes haben die klassischen Bilder von Weltende und Gericht, Himmel und Hölle radikal an Plausibilität verloren. Mehr noch: Auch die großen Gestalten der Theologiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts waren weitgehend darum bemüht, Eschatologie weniger als materialdogmatische Lehre von den „letzten Dingen“ zu verstehen, denn als prinzipielle Dimension theologischer Reflexion zu begreifen. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht es dem Beitrag um eine Wiedergewinnung der materialdogmatischen Eschatologie. Im Anschluss an methodische Überlegungen Friedrich Schleiermachers steht dabei der Status eschatologischer Aussagen zur Debatte. In dreifacher Hinsicht (hermeneutisch, kritisch, theo-logisch) lässt sich Eschatologie als Arbeit an einem theologischen Wirklichkeitsbegriff begreifen: Sie dient erstens einer kritischen Hermeneutik eschatologischer Imaginationen, sie bemüht sich zweitens um eine Labilisierung fixierter Wirklichkeitsinterpretationen, und sie bestimmt drittens den christlichen Gottesgedanken angesichts schlechthinniger Hinfälligkeit und radikaler Vergänglichkeit aller erfahrbaren Realität fort. »Tod«, »Ewigkeit« und »Auferstehung« markieren diejenigen basalen Symbolgehalte christlicher Eschatologie, deren lebensdienliche Funktion sich in den religiösen Praxisvollzügen bewähren muss, indem durch sie Trost, Hoffnung und Gottvertrauen noch an den Gräbern möglich werden kann.
