For the vast majority of contemporary philosophers, God is no longer a subject of their philosophizing. The paper deals with the problem of renewing Philosophical Theology. The centre of this paper is the following claim: A comeback of Philosophical Theology demands both a meta-critique of the critique of metaphysics, even popular in Christian theology, and, above all, a critique of naturalism which is the prevailing metaphysics adopted by the contemporary intellectual elites.

This article focuses on the question of sin in the context of natural theology‚ in light of the Barth/Brunner debate. A contemporary notion of sin would benefit from Barth’s approach, but shorn of his strict doctrine of sin as nothingness (‘Nichtiges’). Brunner holds to the Augustinian tradition’s claim that sin is a paradox by distinguishing between the formal and material in the imago dei . On such a basis, we are able to claim that sin is at least wrongdoing, anthropologically speaking. A natural theology of sin complements the doctrines of creation, election and reconciliation while correlating with findings from the natural sciences. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel konzentriert sich auf die Frage der Sünde im Kontext der natürlichen Theologie, im Licht der Barth/Brunner Debatte. Eine zeitgenössische Vorstellung von Sünde wäre von Barths Ansatz profitieren, aber ohne seine strenge Lehre von der Sünde als das Nichts (»Nichtiges«). Brunner hält an der Augustiner-Tradition den Anspruch, dass die Sünde ist ein Paradox, durch die Unterscheidung zwischen der formalen und Material in der imago dei. Auf dieser Grundlage können wir behaupten, dass die Sünde ist mindestens Fehlverhalten, anthropologisch gesprochen. Eine natürliche Theologie der Sünde ergänzt die Lehren der Schöpfung, Wahl und Versöhnung, während die Korrelation mit den Ergebnissen aus den Naturwissenschaften.

The theological-philosophical works of Paul Tillich are among the best and most up-to-date system designs of the 20 th century. Especially Tillich’s early writings, which in parts are newly or even the first time edited, raise the question if Tillich’s lifework is consistent. In particular, today’s researchers consider Tillich’s German works of higher quality than his later writings. Thus, are the latter works really so aporetic as some claim? Is there another way to explain Tillich’s late and most popular writings? This article tries to contemplate the consistency of Tillich’s theology by interpreting Tillich’s lifework as a whole.

In this paper, I explore the possibility of reading Wittgenstein’s understanding of religious belief with Tillich’s concept of existential/religious doubt, especially as developed in his Dynamics of Faith . I argue, first, that Wittgenstein’s understanding of religious belief as a deep certainty of a grammatical remark is not the same as his understanding of hinge-certainty of “hinge propositions”, and that the relevant difference is that Wittgenstein leaves room for the possibility of doubt in the former but not in the latter. Second, I argue that Tillich’s concept of dynamic faith by which Tillich explicates the role of doubt internal to religious believing can enrich the Wittgensteinian conception of religious belief. Despite the notable differences between Wittgenstein’s thoughts and Tillich’s overall system of theology, Tillich’s treatment of the concept of “faith” signals a possibility of a more positive way of relating Wittgenstein’s grammatical investigation and Tillich’s mature understanding of philosophical theology. At the end of the essay, responding to D. Z. Phillips’ negative assessment of Tillich’s theology in the name of Wittgenstein, I suggest what such positive way of relating the two might look like. Zusammenfassung In diesem Artikel erkunde ich die Möglichkeit des Lesens von Wittgensteins Verständnis des religiösen Glaubens in Bezug auf Tillichs ­Begriff des existentiellen/religiösen Zweifels, vor allem in seiner Dynamik des Glaubens. Als Erstes werde ich argumentieren, dass Wittgensteins Verständnis des religiösen Glaubens als eine tiefe Gewissheit einer grammatischen Bemerkung nicht das Gleiche ist wie sein Verständnis von Angelsicherheit der »Angelsätze.« Der Unterschied ist, dass Wittgenstein ein Raum für die Möglichkeit von Zweifel im ersten Konzept lässt, aber nicht im Zweiten. Ich werde dann argumentieren, dass Tillichs Konzept des dynamischen Glaubens – in welchem er die Rolle des internen Zweifels am religiösen Glauben expliziert – Wittgensteins Konzeption des religiösen Glaubens signifikant bereichern kann. Trotz der bemerkenswerten Unterschiede zwischen den Gedanken Wittgensteins und Tillichs Gesamtsystem der Theologie, signalisiert Tillichs Behandlung des Begriffs des »Glaubens« eine Möglichkeit eines positiven Bezuges zwischen Wittgensteins grammatischer Untersuchung und Tillichs reifer philosophischer Theologie. Am Ende des Aufsatzes, als Reaktion auf D.Z. Phillips negative Beur­teilung von Tillichs Theologie im Namen von Wittgenstein, werde ich einen Vorschlag machen, wie die positivere Art der Beziehung der Beiden aussehen könnte.

In his writings, Luther does not offer a full-blown epistemological theory or model of cognitive psychology. Nevertheless, he occasionally makes use of some already available theories, but seems to do this in a very eclectic manner. Many of his treatments of epistemology and psychology are aimed at specifically religious use, and he seems to draw from ancient and contemporary theories only to the extent that they suit his religious aims. It is not possible to argue that Luther adopts any clear-cut philosophical theory, which he then employs coherently across the fields of philosophy and theology. However, it is possible to analyze how Luther uses different philosophical theories. At best, this demonstrates Luther’s dependence on late medieval and earlier philosophy and may help to find commonalities between Luther and precedent traditions. Zusammenfassung In seinen Schriften bietet Luther weder eine vollständige Erkenntnistheorie noch ein Modell der kognitiven Psychologie an. Trotzdem verwendet er gelegentlich bereits vorhandene Theorien, tut dies aber in einer sehr eklektischen Weise. Viele seiner Behandlungen der Erkenntnistheorie und Psychologie zielen auf einen spezifisch religiösen Gebrauch. Außerdem scheint er die alten und zeitgenössischen Theorien nur zu verwenden, wenn sie zu seinen religiösen Zielen passen. Es ist nicht möglich zu argumentieren, dass Luther eine klare philosophische Theorie übernimmt, die er in den Bereichen der Philosophie und Theologie konsequent anwendet. Allerdings ist es möglich, Luthers Gebrauch verschiedener philosophischer Theorien zu analysieren. Bestenfalls zeigt dies Luthers Abhängigkeit von spätmittelalterlicher und älterer Philosophie. Es kann auch hilfreich sein, Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Luther und vorhergehenden Traditionen zu identifizieren.

In the 20th century there were at least four distinct modes of discussion developed regarding the category »the Holy.« The first mode of the category of the Holy is found in the classical and modern phenomenology of religion. During his visit to the Synagogue in Morocco in 1911, Rudolf Otto discovered the Holy as a noema of religious intentionality of consciousness. The second mode of discussion regarding the category »Holy« (which we may call the philosophical mode) is, with the phenomenology of religion, an independent orientation in phenomenological philosophy: the philosophical phenomenology of the Holy. B. Welte and the philosophers of his school (K. Hemmerle, B. Casper, P. Hünermann and others) represent this approach. The philosophical phenomenology of the Holy concerns itself with the clarification of the ontological status and epistemological possibilities of hierophany. The third mode of discussion about the category of »the Holy« can be described as theological or philosophical-theological. Besides M. Scheler we could add the names P. Tillich and P. Florensky to the list of representatives of the theological phenomenology of religion. The fourth mode, a special mode in the treatment of the category of »the Holy,« is found in the Russian philosophy at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. It appears that the turn to this term, which is reflected in the works of W. Rozanov, A. Losev, P. Florensky and other thinkers, is very close to phenomenological philosophy and philosophical hermeneutics.

The article – referring to the unveiling (September 2013) of the reconstructed, and the only worldwide, memorial of the 18 th century Jewish philosopher (a Pole by birth) Salomon Maimon (in principle the representative of German philosophy) – presents the theory of the possible provenience of the two preserved manuscripts of this thinker: Taalumot Chochma and Cheshek Shlomo . The suggested hypothesis is drawn from the fact that Maimon stayed in his last years in the manor of count Hans Wilhelm Adolf von Kalckreuth in Podbrzezie Dolne ( German: Nieder Siegersdorf) – today’s Kożuchów (Lower Silesia, Poland). Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz, der sich auf die Enthüllung des im Jahre 2013 rekonstruierten und weltweit einzigen Denkmals des jüdischen Philosophen des 18. Jahrhunderts, allerdings eines Polen von Geburt, Salomon Maimon, der im Prinzip ein Vertreter der deutschen Philosophie war, bezieht, stellt die Theorie der möglichen Herkunft der beiden erhaltenen Handschriften dieses Denkers Taalumot Chochma und Cheshek Shlomo dar. Die vorgeschlagene Hypothese folgt der Tatsache, dass Maimon seine letzten Jahre im Herrenhaus des Grafen Hans Wilhelm Adolf von Kalckreuth in Podbrzezie Dolne (Nieder Siegersdorf) verbracht hat – das heute zur Stadt Kożuchów zählt (Niederschlesien, Polen).
