Mammalia is an international, multidisciplinary, bimonthly journal devoted to the inventory, analysis and interpretation of mammalian diversity. It publishes original results on all aspects of the systematics and biology of mammals with a strong focus on ecology, including biodiversity analyses, distribution habitats, diet, predator-prey relationships, competition, community analyses and conservation of mammals. The journal also accepts submissions on sub-fossil or recently extinct mammals.

Feeding ecology of two rodent species, Ctenodactylus gundi and Ctenodactylus vali (Ctenodactylidae), in North-western Algerian Sahara

We investigated the feeding ecology of the two Ctenodactylus species, Ctenodactylus gundi and Ctenodactylus vali , in the Bechar region (North-western Algerian Sahara) over a two-year period, using microhistological analysis of faecal samples, including the first quantitative data on the diet of C. vali . Both species are strictly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, seeds, stems, and flowers. Ctenodactylus gundi , which inhabits semi-arid regions, exhibited a broad and opportunistic diet (27 plant species), whereas C. vali , found in more arid regions, showed a more specific diet, dominated by Amaranthaceae. Both diets reflect local and seasonal plant availability following rainfalls, with mainly Chrysanthemum macrocarpum and Capparis spinosa for C. gundi, Haloxylon scoparium, Atriplex halimus and Salsola vermiculata for C. vali . Although competitive interactions may occur, differences in both diets seem mainly due to climatic conditions that support the parapatric range of the two species.

Amplicon-based next-generation sequencing of armadillo feces: a proof of concept for noninvasive studies of Xenarthrans

We applied DNA metabarcoding to investigate the fecal composition of two armadillo species ( Chaetophractus villosus and Dasypus septemcinctus hybridus ). Two samples were analyzed. Total DNA was extracted using a stool DNA kit (PB-L, Argentina). Libraries were constructed with universal 16S and 18S rRNA primers and sequenced on a MiSeq system. A total of 205 taxa from 25 phyla were identified: environmental ( n = 83), gut microbiota ( n = 77), diet ( n = 34), and parasites ( n = 11). Nine zoonotic or potential zoonotic taxa were found, including Blastocystis ST35 in C. villosus . This study supports DNA metabarcoding as a noninvasive tool for investigating lesser-known wild species.

Cormura brevirostris (Wagner, 1843) is widely distributed across Central and northern South America but remains underrepresented in surveys and collections. We report the first record of this species in Acre, northern Brazil, based on a specimen from the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, collected near the Juruá River in Rodrigues Alves. This finding extends its known range by approximately 400 km northeast and contributes to understanding its distribution in the southwestern Amazon. Additionally, we provide measurements from other Central and South American specimens and present an updated distribution map of the species in the Neotropics.

Two micromammal faunas from archaeological contexts in Türkiye

In the interaction between Man and his environment, the role of small mammals is often overlooked. Although micromammals are used as an indicator for palaeoenvironments of the Palaeolithic, the role of synanthropic species, from the Holocene is, particularly for Anatolia, insufficiently documented and not well understood. This study reports the discovery of micromammal remains from two archaeological sites in northeastern Türkiye: Niksar Castle and Pulur Höyük. So far, the newly discovered fauna consists of a rat ( Rattus rattus ), a murine ( Mus musculus ), and a hare ( Lepus europaeus ) in Niksar Castle, whereas the Macedonian mouse ( Mus macedonicus ), a mole rat ( Spalax leucodon ), a hamster ( Mesocricetus brandti ) and an arvicoline ( Microtus sp.) were found in Pulur Höyük. The difference between the two assemblages lies in Niksar Castle yielding mostly synanthropic species, whereas the Pulur Höyük assemblage has an indigenous wild small mammal fauna.

Cranial morphometry of the Ethiopian multimammate mice of the genus Mastomys: taxonomic and ecological aspects

Cryptic diversity – the presence of genetically distinct but morphologically similar taxa – is a key feature of the genus Mastomys , widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, three such species are found in sympatry. In this study, geometric morphometrics was applied to 130 genetically identified specimens (skulls). Significant interspecific shape differences were detected, while centroid size largely overlapped. A high level of intraspecific variation was also observed, likely reflecting ecological flexibility and seasonal generation trends. These results suggest that morphological divergence can remain limited in genetically isolated lineages, highlighting the role of cryptic speciation as an important evolutionary process in generalist rodent taxa.

First report of leucism in Critically Endangered banteng (Bos javanicus) in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

Observation and camera traps were employed to document leucisistic and normal banteng ( Bos javanicus ). In 2016, the first leucistic banteng was found in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. In 2022, this leucistic individual was seen together with both a one-year-old and a two-year-old leucistic banteng in a saltlick 240 m from the river. These were assumed to be calves of a mature leucistic female. Pure white (leucism) and creamy (isabellinism) color patterns were observed. In 2025, five leucistic bantengs were found in the same saltlick. This finding could contribute to planning for the welfare and conservation of leucistic banteng.

The ecology of Asia’s smallest ungulate, the mouse deer ( Moschiola indica ), remains poorly documented. We assessed the occurrence and temporal activity patterns of mouse deer using camera-trap survey data obtained from four camera traps deployed along the Moyar River within the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The calculated photo capture rate of mouse deer was 1.35 photos/100 trap nights, 0.22 for the Stripe-necked mongoose ( Urva vitticolla ), and 0.18 for both the Indian crested porcupine ( Hystrix indica ) and Sloth bear ( Melursus ursinus ). Mouse deer and stripe-necked mongooses were predominantly nocturnal; however, mouse deer exhibited heightened midnight activity between 2200 and 0400 h. Stripe-necked mongooses showed a comparable pattern, with peak activity between 2300 and 0300 h and secondary peak around 0630 h. Temporal activity pattern overlaps between the M. indica and U. vitticolla was estimated at Δ 1 = 0.53 ± 0.08 SE (95 % bootstrap CI: 0.38–0.69). Although caution is warranted due to the limited sampling effort of this study, our findings underscore the importance of conserving riverine habitats. Furthermore, information on temporal activity patterns can contribute to improved monitoring and management of cryptic forest-dwelling ungulates.

The Syrian brush-tailed mouse Calomyscus tsolovi Peshev, 1991, known only from a small hypodigm obtained in southern Syria in 1982, has not been recorded since its original discovery. The species may represent one of the most enigmatic small mammals in the Middle East. Here, we summarize all available information on C. tsolovi , discuss possible causes for its excessive rarity, and highlight the urgent need for targeted field surveys to verify its continued existence.

Species richness and photographic capture rate of mammals in Northwestern Ecuador

The Chocó ecoregion, one of the world’s most biodiverse and endemic regions, is considered a global conservation priority. Despite its importance, the Ecuadorian Chocó remains one of the least studied areas of the ecoregion, with limited information on the composition and distribution of its wildlife. Our objective was to estimate the relative abundance (measured as the photographic capture rate) of mammals in the southern Chocó Biogeographic Region in Esmeraldas. From November 2023 to March 2024, we installed 61 double camera-trap stations across 549 km 2 . With a sampling effort of 5,766 trap-nights, we obtained 1,479 independent records of 21 species of wild mammals, representing 16 families and seven orders. Of the recorded species: Myrmecophaga tridactyla , Alouatta palliata , Cebus capucinus , Speothos venaticus , Panthera onca and Tayassu pecari are classified as Critically Endangered nationally. Photographic capture rates ranged from 0.02 to 14.13 independent events/100 trap-nights, with Dasyprocta punctata (PCR = 14.13; 95 % CI: 7.81–24.74) having the highest capture rates. Species richness in the study area is comparable to that of other protected areas along the Ecuadorian coast. The presence of keystone species, including the jaguar and the white-lipped peccary, highlighting the region’s importance for the conservation of threatened species.

A notable geographic and environmental extension of Lutreolina massoia (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae): first record for Peru

We report the first Peruvian record of Lutreolina massoia from Pampas del Heath, Madre de Dios. The specimen originally identified as Lutreolina crassicaudata was examined using morphologic and molecular data, confirming its identity as L. massoia . This record extends the known distribution ∼1,000 km northward and the lower elevational limit to 200 m a.s.l. It is also the first record from a savanna ecosystem, rather than a moist broadleaf forest, and broadens the climatic space of L . massoia , as the Peruvian locality has warmer and wetter conditions, with a wetter dry season and reduced temperature seasonality and annual range.

Eighty years of Giraffa research reveals patterns and imbalances across species

Giraffe ( Giraffa ) species are ecologically and culturally significant large mammals distributed across Africa. Yet, their conservation has historically been hindered by limited species-specific research and under-recognition of population declines. The recent taxonomic revision of the genus into four distinct species ( Giraffa camelopardalis , G. giraffa , G. reticulata , and G. tippelskirchi ) has amplified the need for disaggregated ecological knowledge to guide effective conservation. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature published 1947–2024 to assess taxonomic, geographic, and thematic trends in Giraffa spp. research. From 817 publications, we found strong geographical and taxonomic bias. In situ studies disproportionately focused on G. giraffa and G. tippelskirchi , while G. camelopardalis and G. reticulata were under-represented. Research was geographically concentrated in Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania, likely reflecting accessibility and research infrastructure. Thematically, behavioural, population, and foraging studies dominated, while physiology, genetics, and demography were under-represented, despite their importance for understanding adaptation and resilience. We identify critical knowledge gaps and provide strategic recommendations to rebalance research, including increased focus on under-represented species, expanded geographic coverage, and improved integration of in situ and ex situ data. Addressing these gaps is essential for advancing evidence-based Giraffa spp. conservation in the face of accelerating environmental change.

Ecology, diversity and distribution of terrestrial small mammals in southeastern Sierra Leone

An inventory of terrestrial small mammals was conducted at five sites in southeastern Sierra Leone with the aim of documenting species diversity, abundance and distribution. Trapping was done using Sherman live traps, Victor traps, Tomahawk live traps and pitfall traps in five habitats across five sites. Based on morphological and DNA barcode-based identification, we recorded a total of 28 terrestrial small mammal species, including 20 rodents and eight shrews in 13,770 trap nights with an average trap success rate of 7 %. We document a possible country record for the rodent species Dephomys cf. eburneae , raising the total known rodent species for the country to 42 species. Furthermore, we document first country record for the shrew species Crocidura longipes , raising the total known shrew species for the country to 15. This study contributes to the knowledge and conservation of terrestrial small mammal diversity and occurrence in Sierra Leone and also provides baseline information for the five study sites. Finally, this study further demonstrates the potential importance of the study sites for conservation of terrestrial small mammals in Sierra Leone.

Challenging the allopatric patterns of night monkeys: ecological niche modeling within the Aotus lemurinus complex

The Aotus lemurinus complex comprises three-night monkey species: Aotus griseimembra , A. lemurinus , and Aotus zonalis , whose distributions have historically been described as allopatric. In this study we applied ecological niche modeling (ENM) to evaluate this long-held hypothesis by comparing their climatic niches and estimate their potential geographic distributions. We assessed regions of potential distribution overlap to determine whether species distributions agree with allopatric, sympatric or parapatric patterns. Further, we quantified pairwise climatic niche similarity test to analyze niche conservatism patterns in this complex. Our results revealed potential regions of sympatry and parapatric contact identified in the inter-Andean valleys of Colombia and along the Colombia -Panama border, spanning elevations above and below 1,000 m. We found a phylogenetic niche conservatism within the complex. Thus A. griseimembra and A. lemurinus , most related species, showed the moderate higher climatic niche similarity, than the other pairwise comparissons. Overall, these findings challenge the allopatric distribution model and underscore a more dynamic ecological and biogeographic structure within the A. lemurinus complex, highlighting the importance of considering transitional zones and historical processes when interpreting their distributional patterns.

Summer activity and spatiotemporal co-occurrence of the long-tailed goral (Naemorhedus caudatus) and sympatric mammals in Jangsudae, Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

Understanding the activity patterns and spatial ecology of endangered species is essential for effective conservation management. We used camera traps to document summer activity patterns and spatiotemporal relationships of the endangered long-tailed goral ( Naemorhedus caudatus ) with co-occurring mammals in Jangsudae, Seoraksan National Park, South Korea. During a 98 days survey (Jun–September 2016), we recorded 213 independent goral detections across 18 camera stations, confirming widespread distribution. Gorals exhibited crepuscular/diurnal activity, with the highest spatiotemporal overlap with water deer ( Hydropotes inermis ) (spatial: 0.77; temporal: Δ = 0.85), followed by roe deer ( Capreolus pygargus ) and wild boar ( Sus scrofa ). Minimal overlap occurred with nocturnal meso-carnivores as Asian badger ( Meles leucurus ), leopard cat ( Prionailurus bengalensis ), and Siberian weasel ( Mustela sibirica ). This study provides essential baseline data on summer temporal and spatial ecology for this conservation-priority species, contributing critical information for monitoring programs and management planning.

First record of placentophagia in the Aztec fruit-eating bat, Dermanura azteca (Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae)

We report the first evidence of placentophagia and birth-associated behaviors in the Aztec fruit-eating bat ( Dermanura azteca ) in central Mexico. During monitoring of a tunnel roost, a female was observed consuming the placenta immediately after parturition. This is, to our knowledge, the first documented case of placentophagia in the genus Dermanura . Previous evidence of this behavior in bats is limited, and our observation expands knowledge of reproductive behavior in D. azteca while underscoring the need for further research on this phenomenon in Neotropical bats.

Spatial ecology and distribution of the Tibetan antelope and other sympatric ungulates in a cold Himalayan desert

The Tibetan antelope chiru ( Pantholops hodgsonii ), a highly specialized ungulate endemic to the Tibetan Plateau, exhibits a unique seasonal migration of a male-dominated population to the cold, arid Changchenmo Valley in eastern Ladakh, India, raising important ecological and conservation concerns. Over three years, we examined the population structure, spatial distribution, and habitat use of chiru in relation to four sympatric ungulates: argali ( Ovis ammon ), wild yak ( Bos mutus ), Tibetan wild ass kiang, ( Equus kiang ), and bharal ( Pseudois nayaur ). Across 162 surveys covering 918.6 km, we recorded 1,670 individuals, including 710 male chiru. Chiru had a mean encounter rate of 1.19 ± 1.17 individuals/km and a typical group size of 13.69. Our results indicate that sympatric ungulates partition resources through habitat selection, facilitating summer co-occurrence, while competition intensifies in winter and spring. Chiru and kiang exhibited facilitative interactions, whereas chiru showed strong segregation from other species. Notably, we observed previously unrecorded overwintering by chiru. Despite a seemingly stable population, habitat overlap, climate change, infrastructure development, and livestock competition pose significant threats. Urgent conservation measures focusing on habitat protection, reducing human disturbance, and engaging local stakeholders are critical to ensure the long-term survival of chiru and other ungulates in this fragile Trans-Himalayan ecosystem.

Medium and large mammals in an anthropized area of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, Mexico

Anthropogenic activities such as farming and hunting have increasingly impacted the community and activity patterns of mammals within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (TCBR), Mexico. We conducted a camera-trap survey from March 2022 to May 2023 using 14 stations within the TCBR in the locality of Zapotitlán Salinas, Puebla state. Our aim was to record medium and large-sized mammals and analyze their relative abundance and activity patterns by hours of the day, lunar phase, and dry/rainy seasons. We recorded 1,102 independent events for 11 species, with Carnivora (Mustelidae, Mephitidae, Felidae, and Canidae) comprising the highest proportion (55 %) of detections. Most species showed predominantly nocturnal activity (76.41 % of records). Mammal activity was not homogeneously distributed over the 24 h daily period (X 2 = 939; df = 2; p < 0.001). Overall, we also observed that 74.77 % of detection events occurred during waxing and waning moon phases, particularly in the dry season. To our knowledge, this represents the first detailed assessment of mammal activity for this locality. Our findings indicate that Zapotitlán Salinas continues to have suitable conditions to maintain viable mammal populations and highlight the need for targeted conservation actions that integrate scientific research with local community efforts to safeguard the ecological integrity of this area and its biodiversity.

Two white wild boars within a single family group in southwestern Japan

This study reports a rare field observation of two white wild boars ( Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) appearing within the same matrilineal family group in southwestern Japan. The individuals – a subadult and a piglet – were recorded simultaneously by motion-activated camera traps deployed for ungulate monitoring. Although the monochrome video imagery prevented a definitive classification of albinism versus leucism, the co-occurrence of two white individuals within one family group strongly suggests a hereditary basis. As white coat phenotypes in Artiodactyla are extremely rare, this record contributes valuable documentation and highlights the need for genetic surveys of wild boar populations.

Macrocephaly in the wild: uncovering a cranial anomaly in Peromyscus (Rodentia: Cricetidae)

Anatomical anomalies are uncommon deviations in bodily structures, and individuals exhibiting them in the wild are extremely rare because they usually do not reach adulthood, either due to embryonic abortion or survival limitations. We report a macrocephalic specimen of Peromyscus labecula with an enlarged neurocranium, while the splanchnocranium, skin, and coloration remain normal. The specimen is an adult female with morphological traits indicating an apparently healthy condition, suggesting that this cranial anomaly is not lethal during embryonic development or early postnatal life. Macrocephaly is rare in humans and domestic mammals and had not been documented in wild mammals.

The small mammals of the Maromizaha protected area, central eastern Madagascar: the ability of some Malagasy “forest-dwelling” species to adapt to habitat degradation

All of the native terrestrial small mammals of Madagascar, comprising 59 species (Tenrecidae and Nesomyinae), are endemic and most considered as forest-dependent. However, recent fieldwork in degraded natural forest areas has found that certain species can live in disturbed habitats. Herein based on fieldwork in central eastern Madagascar and employing systematic trapping (live traps and pitfall lines), we test the importance of habitat quality for a range of species in three contiguous moist evergreen forest habitat types: relatively intact, slightly degraded, and secondary. We also employ data from two sites (slightly degraded and secondary) on levels of disturbance, presence of introduced species (Muridae and Soricidae), and soil parameters, to examine possible correlates. The two sites with relatively intact and slightly disturbed forest habitats have similar native small mammal faunas. In contrast, the secondary habitat is depauperate, although with certain tenrecid species that were previously presumed to be “forest-dependent”. Introduced species have not heavily colonized the largely intact or degraded habitats. Our survey data indicate an important level of adaptability of previously presumed “forest-dependent” or “largely forest-dependent” small mammal species to different levels of human disturbance, although at the secondary site, species diversity is notably lower.

Baseline data on species richness and abundance in protected areas is necessary for assessing conservation effectiveness and enabling long-term monitoring. This study provides the first assessment of wild mammal species richness in the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve (KARR), using camera, Sherman, and cat trapping from November 2022 to June 2023. Fourteen species were recorded, with the Arabian Red Fox ( Vulpes vulpes arabica , Linnaeus 1758) being the most abundant, and the Arabian Sand Gazelle ( Gazella marica , Thomas 1897) the only threatened species (Vulnerable). These results provide a baseline for KARR mammal diversity, guiding future monitoring and management efforts in the reserve.

Richness and zoogeographic affinities of mammals in a sub-Andean forest in the middle basin of the Cauca River, Colombia

The middle Cauca River basin is an inter-Andean region located in Colombia and is part of one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. However, this region, historically and continuously impacted by human activities, lacks detailed information about the mammal species it harbours. We compiled a mammal species checklist in one of the region’s forests and explored zoogeographic affinities through fieldwork, literature reviews, and the analysis of specimens deposited in the biological collections. This forest, known as the Bosque San Francisco, is a sub-Andean ecosystem with characteristics of both dry and montane forests, representing a potential refuge for biodiversity. We recorded 55 mammal species encompassing 48 genera, 24 families, and 8 orders, representing 9.94 % of Colombia’s mammal species. Four species ( Leopardus pardinoides , Leopardus wiedii , Lontra annectens , and Aotus griseimembra ) are classified as Near Threatened or Vulnerable. Chiroptera (24 species) was the most diverse order followed by Carnivora (10 species) and Rodentia (eight species). All recorded species exhibit broad latitudinal range and are not restricted to a specific ecoregion, however, the species similarity analysis indicates that elevation is key to explain diversity patterns. Thus, determining the mechanisms that structure and sustain biodiversity in these ecosystems requires further research efforts.

An exposed tree fork and a rock formation crevice as diurnal roost sites for a nocturnal hollow-retreating marsupial, the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula)

The common brushtail possum ( Trichosurus vulpecula ) is a nocturnal marsupial that primarily retreats to tree hollows. However, there are some reports of denning in other sites like dense foliage, rock outcrops and animal burrows. We report observations of common brushtail possums roosting in an exposed tree fork and roosting in a ground-level rock crevice in the Blue Mountains region, New South Wales, Australia. Both remained at those sites for the entire day, with the individual in the exposed tree fork waking briefly to browse. The observation of the possum in the sandstone crevice differs from previously reported instances of roosting in rock outcrops in that this crevice was at ground level and accessible to ground-based predators.

Factors affecting seasonal fine-scale habitat use by wild ungulates in Vansda National Park, Gujarat, India

Assessing habitat use of ungulates is essential for their long-term conservation in protected areas. Present study assessed the fine scale seasonal habitat use of three wild ungulate species i.e . Axis axis , Muntiacus muntjak and Tetracerus quadricornis in Vansda National Park, Gujarat, India using presence-absence sampling from September 2023 to April 2024. Data were collected using 10-m radius circular plots on 20 randomly placed transects of one km length resulting in total effort of 120 sampling sites. We used binomial generalized model by treating species presence-absence as response variable, and eight ecological and two anthropogenic covariates as predictor variables. We created models with all possible combinations of ecologically significant covariates for each species and best models were selected based on ΔAIC < 2. In winter, spotted deer prefer canopy cover and grass cover. Barking deer favor canopy cover in both seasons and shrubs in winter. Four-horned antelopes avoid favor grass cover in winter and prefer canopy cover in both the seasons. These highlighted varying responses of ungulates towards dynamics resources. Therefore, future management practices should consider differential response of ungulates towards resources during seasonal changes and livestock grazing in Vansda.

Cyclopes dorsalis (Gray, 1865), the westernmost silky anteater, is poorly documented in the southern portion of its range. We compiled 284 verified occurrence records, including 14 new records from five provinces in Ecuador. Four localities in El Oro represent the southernmost confirmed sites to date. These include coastal and seasonally dry forests, highlighting potential range continuity in under-sampled regions. Our data refine the known distribution of C. dorsalis , support the need to revise IUCN range maps, and identify key areas for conservation. We recommend expanded field sampling and molecular analyses to investigate population structure and potential cryptic diversity.

Bioacoustics is a valuable tool for conserving threatened species, enabling the identification of population patterns and activity in cryptic, elusive animals. We studied the acoustic signals using opportunistic acoustic recordings of Callistomys pictus , an endangered small mammal endemic to Brazil’s heavily impacted Atlantic Forest. We described, classified, and mathematically confirmed at least three distinct vocalization types in its repertoire – whine, warble, and whistle – which are compatible with vocalizations by other closely related taxa. These results address critical gaps in knowledge of its behavior and vocal communication, offering insights that can significantly aid its conservation.

We investigated the food habits of Hilgendorf’s tube-nosed bats ( Murina hilgendorfi ) in a coniferous forest and compared them to the results of a previous study conducted in broad-leaved forests. In coniferous forest, they consumed non-volant prey, indicating that they are typical gleaners relying on beetles with narrower niche breadth, whereas, in broad-leaved forests, they consume grasshoppers as well as beetles with wider niche breadth. This suggests that intraspecific variation in food habits is linked to habitat characteristics. Limited food resources in cool temperate coniferous forest may have led to dependence on specific food category.

A simple rule-of-thumb method to define environmental flow for the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus)

The Pyrenean desman ( Galemys pyrenaicus ) is a semiaquatic insectivore that is critically endangered due to inbreeding, predation by the invasive American mink, and habitat fragmentation and degradation, among many other causes. Many of the streams currently occupied by the Pyrenean desman, even those protected within the Natura 2000 network, are affected by hydropower. However, the environmental flows (eflows) set by the water administrations within its distribution areas do not account for the specific needs of this species. Unfortunately, the small size, nocturnal habits and low population density of this animal make it impossible to gather the information necessary to draw habitat preference curves as detailed as those obtained for many fish and invertebrate species. As an alternative, given the urgent need to prevent the extinction of this endangered species, we propose to combine the Pyrenean desman preference for riffles, runs and pools with maps of these habitats under different flow conditions in the Leitzaran, a stream affected by diversion hydropower. We show how habitat suitability drops as riffle area decreases with flow reduction, and how this information can be used to provide a simple, rule-of-thumb method for defining eflows for the species. This method can be adapted to other populations differing in their habitat preferences, as well as to rivers with contrasting habitat characteristics.

Shortened non-breeding period and extended reproductive activity in male wild mice during a context of increased temperature

This study investigated seasonal changes in the reproductive cycle of wild large Japanese field mice ( Apodemus speciosus ) in Niigata, Japan, within a context of increased temperature. From April 2024 to February 2025, monthly sampling showed that spermatogenesis was only briefly suppressed in November and December, with recovery observed by January. Histological analysis of testicular tissue revealed that the non-breeding period was shortened compared to previously reported patterns (Akiyama et al. 2015. Effect of seasonal changes on testicular morphology and the expression of circadian clock genes in Japanese large field mice ( Apodemus speciosus ). J. Biol. Regul. Homeost. Agents 29: 589–600), and reproductive activity was extended into months that had previously been considered non-breeding. These observations were made during 2024, which recorded the highest average annual temperature in Japan’s history, suggesting that reproductive timing in A. speciosus may be influenced by recent warming.
