Accurate identification of predator species is a critical requirement to investigate their diet using faecal samples. We used non-invasive sampling and two methods of predator identification to investigate the diets of sympatric carnivores in a highly deforested region of the Brazilian Amazon. Of 108 scats, 81 could be identified at the species level using DNA sequencing and/or trichology. The former performed better than the latter (81.5% vs. 54.3% of the identified samples), and results were quite congruent (89.7% concordance in the 29 samples that could be assessed with both approaches). Nine species were identified, out of which four (crab-eating fox, ocelot, puma and jaguar) presented a sufficient number of samples to allow dietary analyses. The crab-eating fox was the most generalist ( BA =0.92); ocelots focused on small- to medium-sized prey; pumas fed mostly on medium-sized items; and jaguars mostly targeted large-sized prey. A considerable overlap was observed between ocelots and pumas in all estimations ( O =0.47–0.83). The presence of jaguars in the same region could be driving pumas to select medium- and small-sized prey. The results of this study highlight the importance of reliable predator identification and the need for in-depth ecological studies in areas where carnivore species are sympatric.

Urbanisation creates challenges and opportunities for wildlife. Globally, small carnivores have colonised urban spaces, but we do not know whether or how sympatric carnivores partition resources in order to co-exist. We studied the diet and degree of dietary overlap of two sympatric herpestid mongooses – yellow, Cynictis penicillata , and slender, Galerella sanguinea mongoose – in a small urban nature area in South Africa. The composition of 2600 yellow and 2000 slender mongoose scats was sampled over a year in an Eco-Estate, where wildlife have contact with humans, and a Nature Estate, where contact is reduced. We analysed the frequency of occurrence of invertebrates, mammals, birds, plants and anthropogenic items in scats. Invertebrates and mammals were most abundant for both species in the Nature Estate and for slender mongoose in the Eco-Estate, while anthropogenic items were more prevalent in yellow mongoose scats in the Eco-Estate. Both species included anthropogenic items in their diet in the Eco-Estate only. Scat components varied seasonally. In summer, invertebrates were more abundant in scats of both species, yet during the colder months, invertebrates decreased and vertebrates (more so in the slender mongoose) and anthropogenic items (more so in the yellow mongoose) increased. Dietary overlap was greatest in summer and lowest in winter. Nonetheless, the specialised slender mongoose diet and a generalist yellow mongoose diet potentially facilitates their co-existence.

We determined the seasonal diet of the Andean fox Lycalopex culpaeus in three habitats in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, by analyzing their scat contents. We estimated the biomass and the number of individuals of each prey species consumed and compared our results with those of other studies on Lycalopex foxes in Chile and South America. In general, the L. culpaeus diet was characterized by a generalist behavior and higher dietary breadth than those in other ecosystems. In contrast with the other biomes of southern Chile and South America, insects represented the most frequent prey species in the present study and the main food item, comprising more than 50% of all prey at the three study sites; however, in terms of biomass, rodent and reptile prey showed the highest percentage from summer to winter. Significant differences were found between the biomass consumed among sites. Likewise, we found a relationship between the niche breadth of the diet and the primary productivity of the sites. Statistically significant differences in prey items consumed were noted across seasons and sites located at different altitudes, which reflected an opportunistic response to the availability of prey. Our report contributes to current data about the natural history of L. culpaeus in hyper-arid habitats.

The Eurasian otter ( Lutra lutra ) is among the most endangered mammals in Italy, its population being isolated and genetically distinct from other European populations. Yet, its ecology and behavior are largely unknown in Italy, preventing its much-needed effective conservation. We radio-tracked one male and one female otter daily in Southern Italy, for 1 year and 8 months, respectively. The male and female used nearly 30 and 20 km of river, respectively. The extension of the ranges varied among seasons. The male was more conservative in its spatial utilization, being mostly located around a trout farm. These first direct data on space use by wild Italian otters provided preliminary information potentially useful for a sound management of this endangered population.

A recent review of the status of the Western or European polecat ( Mustela putorius ) by Croose et al. (Croose, E., J.W. Duckworth, S. Ruette, D.V. Skumatov, V.V. Kolesnikov and A.P. Saveljev. 2018. A review of the status of the Western polecat Mustela putorius : a neglected and declining species? Mammalia. 82: 550–564.) showed that the species is declining over large parts of its range. The information on the Dutch population in this review was based on incorrect information in the Atlas of the Dutch Mammals . Here, we correct this information and state that we currently have insufficient data to make inference about the Dutch polecat population. Consequently, there is a need for a robust monitoring scheme for polecats in the Netherlands.

We investigated the food habits of the Japanese serow ( Capricornis crispus ) in alpine habitats using direct observations at Mount Asama, central Japan. We observed the feeding behavior of 13 identified adult serows throughout the year, from April 2016 to October 2017. The animals’ food habits were evaluated by the feeding probability among 2129 observation bouts. The most important food throughout the year was grasses (feeding probability, 57.6%), followed by forbs (43.5%) and dwarf bamboos (11.4%). However, the feeding probability for each food category drastically changed in relation to the season; in particular, grasses and forbs were especially important foods from spring to autumn, whereas dwarf bamboos and conifers were important in winter. These results suggest that the food habits of the serow are flexible and will vary according to seasonal changes in vegetation. The findings also suggest that the feeding ecology of the serow in an alpine area tends to match that of an intermediate feeder rather than a browser, as was reported by several previous studies conducted in forested habitats. However, the food habits of the serows in the alpine habitats were similar to those of other alpine caprids, such as the mountain goat ( Oreamnos americanus ), alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra ) and Pyrenean chamois ( Rupicapra pyrenaica ). This is the first study to demonstrate that the food habits of the serow are variable according to the season and/or population. Similar to other alpine caprids, the flexible food habits of the serow in alpine habitats are likely an adaptation to an environment with a characteristically unstable food supply.

In the agricultural landscape, thousands of animals are killed yearly as a result of agricultural machinery innovation, mostly because of a higher harvesting speed and wider cutting bars. Harvesting machines besides predation by red fox ( Vulpes vulpes L.) on roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus L.) in the intensively managed cultural landscape are the most crucial factor in fawn mortality. This article offers an evaluation of the mostly used preventive methods, which aim to drive roe deer does along with their fawns out of fodder meadows prepared for harvest in the Czech Republic. Evaluation of efficiency and effectiveness of the different methods was made based on the questionnaire survey published in a professional hunting journal. The assessment of responses from a survey was followed by a field-based investigation conducted before fodder harvesting. The devices studied for efficiency were acoustic, optical and scent deterrents in comparison to the traditional search method combined with volunteers and hunting dogs. The results show differences in the number of fawns saved per hectare. A significant difference was found only between the optical deterrent method (0.4 fawns saved per hectare) and traditional search method (0.09 fawns saved per hectare). This study found no substantial difference among various deterring devices in terms of their effectiveness in reducing the mortality of roe deer fawns. Thus, it is important to explore the innovative methods in the future that can work most effectively for saving not only deer fawns, but also other game animals in the cultural landscape.

The Madras hedgehog ( Paraechinus nudiventris ) is a less-known insectivorous mammal, endemic to southern India, and known from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The nocturnal habit, small body size and elusive nature of P. nudiventris have resulted in limited studies on its habitat selection and ecology. The confirmed locations of P. nudiventris from our field surveys and existing sight records were pooled. These geocoordinates were then used as the “occurrence location” to predict the potential distribution range of P. nudiventris in southern India based on a set of climatic and terrain variables using the MaxEnt algorithm. The predicted model shows the suitable ecological conditions in the districts of Erode, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Coimbatore and Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, making them highly probable sites for its presence. Most of the predicted suitable range and high potential range fall in the non-protected semi-dry zones characterized by low annual rainfall with sparse savanna vegetation, lowland [0–750 m above sea level (asl)] and the rural areas of southern Tamil Nadu. Our findings establish the potential distribution range of this species in parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and most of Tamil Nadu.

The Pyrenean desman ( Galemys pyrenaicus ) is a globally endangered semiaquatic mammal species restricted to Southwest Europe. It is thought to mostly predate on aquatic prey, particularly macroinvertebrates; yet anecdotal information and recent genetic-based findings suggest higher flexibility in its trophic niche. Here, we report on direct observations of wild-caught Pyrenean desmans attacking, killing and consuming live fish (trout – Salmo trutta fario ) and amphibians (Iberian frog – Rana iberica ) in semi-captivity conditions providing unquestionable evidence (photos and videos) of vertebrate attack, killing, handling and consumption by the species. This illustrates the species’ ability to kill and eat vertebrates, corroborating recent evidence on its trophic flexibility.

In recent years, several cases of predation on hunting dogs have been reported in Italy. These cases caused uproar among owners and the wolf was singled out as the culprit. The remains of a dog allegedly killed by wolves were submitted for forensic analysis. Wolf predation was ruled out based on gross findings and wild boar aggression was suspected instead. Genetic analysis of salivary swab samples confirmed that wild boars fed on the dog. As poaching is one of the main threats to wolf conservation, it is essential to identify correctly the predator in cases of attacks on domestic animals.

The current study investigated the impact of roads on native wildlife fauna in Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan. By conducting driven transects over a period of 24 months (March 2012–February 2014), we identified 131 carcasses resulting from wildlife-vehicle collisions or “road kill”, comprising 18 vertebrate species from seven different orders. The Asiatic jackal ( Canis aureus ; Linnaeus, 1758) was the most common road kill (37.4%), followed by the small Indian mongoose ( Urva auropunctatus ; Hodgson, 1836; 9.9%) and the red fox ( Vulpes vulpes ; Linnaeus, 1758; 8.4%). Road kill incidences included both nocturnal (55.6%) and diurnal species (44.5%). The maximum number of road kills were encountered in the Rawalpindi district area (46.6%), followed by Chakwal (36.6%), Jhelum (8.4%) and Attock (8.4%). The majority of road kills occurred on paved roads (93.9%; 0.009 road kill/km) with significantly fewer occurrences on unpaved roads (6.1%; 0.004 road kill/km). Similarly, 77% (0.009/km) of the road kills were found adjacent to protected areas. The majority of road kills (33%) occurred during the spring (February–April) but less in summer (May–July) and winter (November–January) (19.8% for both). The study provides important data on road mortality of wildlife species in the region bordering protected areas in the Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan, to initiate management and conservation strategies.

Ecological monitoring of small mammal occurrence on Ushant Island (Brittany, France) revealed the presence of the bank vole ( Myodes glareolus ) in September 2017. This was the first report of the bank vole on the island. Evaluation of previous small mammal monitoring and analysis of several batches of barn owl pellets allowed us to conclude that the arrival on the island is recent, sometime between 1995 and 2017. Further study is necessary to determine whether the current population, still incompletely distributed into suitable habitats of the island, will be self-sustaining on a long-term basis.

For deciphering the biodiversity of native mammals on the island of Martinique (Lesser Antilles), bats (Chiroptera) were netted in various localities during the course of two separate studies spanning 2004–2015. A total of 2613 individuals were caught in ground-level mist nets at 79 localities. In this study, we concentrate on 1859 captures of nine species of bats caught at 24 capture-rich localities. We provide sex-ratio values, forearm and body weight measurements for each taxon. The order of decreasing abundance in captures was Artibeus jamaicensis , Sturnira angeli , Brachyphylla cavernarum , Monophyllus plethodon , Myotis martiniquensis , Molossus molossus , Ardops nichollsi , Pteronotus davyi and Tadarida brasiliensis . Our results suggest a strong sex-bias in capture rates, with males much more abundant for Ardops and Monophyllus , whereas females are more abundant for Molossus , Pteronotus and Sturnira . A clear sexual dimorphism exists with larger females in Ardops and Pteronotus , whereas males are larger in Molossus , Monophyllus and Sturnira . Reproductive females (pregnant, lactating) were found almost exclusively during the dry season (January to June) for A. jamaicensis , M. plethodon and S. angeli .

Hipposideros speoris is a small-sized leaf-nosed bat and was thought to be restricted to India and Sri Lanka. Based on a single museum specimen preserved in alcohol housed in the National Zoological Collections of the Zoological Survey of India, we report and confirm the presence of H. speoris for the first time in Pyay, Myanmar.
