The white-lipped peccary (WLP; Tayassu pecari ) and the collared peccary (CP; Pecari tajacu ) are social ungulates of huge ecological and economic importance. We determined the habitat occupancy for peccaries in a rural community bordering the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, Mexico. Twenty-eight stratified sampling points were randomly placed in the study area during a rainy and a dry season, where the presence of both peccary species was measured in relation to three ecological variables (habitat type, presence of natural predators, and water availability) and one anthropogenic variable (hunting). Ten sampling points were established with camera traps (total days/camera traps = 2268), and 18 sampling points were plots of 20 m 2 to detect feces and/or footprints. To assess the relationship between both species’ presence and the selected variables, models of habitat occupancy were constructed using a binary matrix of detection/non-detection using the PRESENCE program. For WLP and CP, the respective estimated occupancy probabilities were 30 and 40% in the rainy season and 88 and 44% in the dry season. Our results suggest that occupancy by WLP is affected by habitat type and predators in the rainy season and by water availability and hunting in the dry season. Conversely, for CP, occupancy is affected by water availability and hunting in the rainy season, and by habitat type and predators in the dry season. Thus, hunting negatively affects the way that WLP occupy specific habitats, such as floodplain forest and medium sub-deciduous forest, particularly during periods of water scarcity when the species is more vulnerable to hunting.

Canopy camera trapping is being increasingly used to characterize assemblages of arboreal mammals. In this study we compared, for the first time, the assemblage of arboreal mammals of the Atlantic Forest, surveyed using canopy camera trapping at two protected areas of Misiones, Argentina: Piñalito (11 camera-trap stations) and Cruce Caballero (9 stations), with the assemblage recorded at ground-level with a camera-trapping survey conducted at another protected area, the nearby private reserve Valle del Alegría (18 stations). We calculated the number of independent photo-events for each species and site, and we built species rank abundance curves to compare the recorded species diversity among sites. We recorded six mammal species at Piñalito and Cruce Caballero, and 23 at Valle del Alegría. Canopy-survey sites showed lower diversity but a different and non-nested species composition when compared to the ground-level survey. One of the most frequently recorded species in the canopy, the brown-eared woolly opossum, Caluromys lanatus , categorized as Vulnerable in Argentina, has not been photographed in ground-level camera-trap surveys in Misiones before. Our results suggest that canopy camera trapping represents a robust method to sample arboreal species that are missed in ground-level camera-trap surveys, thus improving forest species inventories.

Rodents of the genus Cricetomys have been reported to be nocturnal with a bimodal activity pattern and to frequently change burrows. However, no studies to date have examined these ecological aspects with the use of radio-telemetry. Five C. emini were captured and radio-collared to study their activity patterns and burrowing ecology from 9 March to 15 April 2016. Nocturnal activity ranged between the hours of 18:00 and 05:00 with a probable reduction of activities between 20:00–23:00 and around 04:00 with diurnal activity between 06:00 and 17:00 h with a reduction of activity between 11:00 and 14:00. While the present study does confirm nocturnal activity and a bimodal pattern, this study also suggests greater diurnal activity as compared to previous studies. Additionally, data presented here also suggest that C . emini may not change burrows as frequently as previously reported.

Small mammal species may occur in sympatry, and it is relevant to investigate the mechanisms that lead to coexistence of the closely related species. Despite this, studies evaluating the coexistence of closely related Neotropical marsupials are insipient. The aim of this study was to analyse the mechanisms of resource partitioning between the sympatric species of mouse opossums Gracilinanus agilis and G. microtarsus (Didelphidae), evaluating their trophic and spatial niche. We hypothesized that G. agilis and G. microtarsus differ in at least one niche dimension (space use or food preferences) as a mechanism of coexistence. In the study we analysed trophic niche by evaluating the frequency of occurrence of food items present in Gracilinanus faeces. Also, we analysed spatial niche by comparing the vegetal stratum where the individuals were captured and its relationship with the environmental complexity. Both species presented a high trophic niche overlap, with differences in the frequencies of occurrence of the consumed items. Although the most frequent items in the faeces were Hymenoptera, Isoptera and Coleoptera, their proportion differed significantly between the two species. The variety of food items also differed, with flowers being more frequent in G. agilis diet, whereas fruits were more recorded for G. microtarsus . The spatial niche was very similar, with both species being more captured in the forest understory. However, habitat complexity influenced the abundance of both species, especially litter depth and its biomass of leaves. The results indicated that the coexistence of the two species is associated with the trophic and spatial niche, and that this niche segregation could be allowing closely related species of Gracilinanus to coexist.

The European wildcat is a small carnivore widespread across Europe and hybridization with the domestic cat is one of the major threats to wildcats. We estimate the population density of wild-living cats (both wildcats and putative hybrids based on pelage) in the Gargano National Park (Southern Italy). We sampled 20 stations for 540 camera days. We obtained 23 images from 17 detections at 10 cameras, and we identified 10 individuals (6 wildcats and 4 putative hybrids). Population density was estimated at 0.34 ± 0.15 SE wild-living cats/km 2 . The proportion of putative hybrids indicates an alarming hybridization for this population.

In 2019, we surveyed the Karuna bat cave during spring and autumn seasons and recorded two species of fruit bats; Rousettus leschenaultii and Eonycteris spelaea , and two species of insectivorous bats; Hipposideros armiger and Rhinolophus macrotis . Although there was no variation in colony size of insectivorous bats, the fruit bat population (around 38,000 individuals) was only recorded in autumn which indicated seasonal migration. Occasional killing of bats, unsustainable guano extraction, and tourism development threaten this major cave for bats in Nepal. The study recommends prioritizing scientific research and bat friendly cave conservation actions.

Data on the dispersal of shrews are still rare, and for some species of Soricidae these are not available at all. Group marking with bait containing rhodamine B was used to study the dispersal of two species of shrews – Laxmann’s shrew ( Sorex caecutiens ) and pygmy shrew ( Sorex minutus ) in the Middle Urals (Russia). Twelve Laxmann’s shrews moved straight-line distances ranging from 80 to 4500 m. Five pygmy shrews dispersed from 475 to 2570 m. The are first field data obtained on dispersal distances of the pygmy shrew. The reported dispersal distances of the Laxmann`s shrew are the maximum known for this species.

The Colombian weasel, Neogale felipei , previously included in the genus Mustela , is considered the rarest carnivore in the Neotropics and is known from only eight localities in Colombia and Ecuador. It is currently classified as Vulnerable, but little is known about the direct threats that the species faces. We present a new locality record for N. felipei in the Andes of southwestern Colombia based on a road-killed specimen. The record is relevant because it provides additional information about morphological variation and describe a new threat to its populations that even affects individuals within protected areas such as the Puracé National Park, where the specimen was found.

We evaluated craniometric sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic (age) variation in invasive Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus from urban and peri-urban areas of Gauteng Province, South Africa, using univariate and multivariate analyses. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), percent contribution of the sum of squares (%SSQs) of each source of variation, principal components analysis (PCA) and unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis showed no sexual dimorphism in both species, however in both species, significant age variation between five age classes based on maxillary molar toothrow cusp eruption and wear was found and the age classes were pooled into juveniles (i.e., individuals of tooth-wear class I), sub-adults (II–III), and adults (IV–V). Few variables showed statistically significant sex-age interaction. The largest %SSQs to the total variance were due to error (i.e.,  residual ), suggesting that apart from sex, age, and their interaction, there were other components that are responsible for the variation. Our approach may be useful for partitioning the effect of sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic variation in other studies, such as our stable isotope analysis-based trophic ecological studies of Rattus species from urban and peri-urban areas of Gauteng Province, South Africa.

The genus Desmodillus is monospecific, consisting of only the Cape short-eared gerbil ( Desmodillus auricularis ). Despite being widely distributed across southern Africa, previous studies did not find evidence of intraspecific phenotypic geographic differentiation. The objectives of this study is to use geometric morphometrics to investigate if and how the skull of D. auricularis varies spatially. It examines the covariation of skull morphology with broad spatial (latitude and longitude) and climatic variables, based on a sample of 580 specimens from southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa). The results did not support the differentiation of D. auricularis populations into distinct geographically isolated phenotypic groups. However, there is strong evidence for clinal variation in skull morphology; the most prominent pattern being a decrease in size from the west (closest to the South Atlantic coast) to the east (towards the continent’s interior). Shape variation was not localized in any skull region and seem to be driven mostly by size (allometry), although it also covaried significantly with latitude and longitude. Statistically significant skull shape sexual dimorphism was also detected, with males having larger crania than females. Spatial clinal variation in skull morphology was mostly associated with differences in the aridity of the habitats relative to their distance from the coast as evidenced by precipitation-related bioclimatic variables—annual precipitation (BIO12), precipitation of driest month (BIO14), and precipitation of driest quarter (BIO17)—covarying the most with skull morphology. This could be driven by either the climate influencing local resources available to populations or by the climate directly instigating phenotypic climatic adaptations.

Previous studies have suggested species- and individual-specific morphologies of cephalic shields of three-banded armadillos ( Tolypeutes spp.). Central cephalic scutes would form discrete lines; the first two posterior lines being composed of one scute (1-1) in Tolypeutes matacus and one followed by two scutes (1-2) in Tolypeutes tricinctus . However, conclusions were limited to a few specimens and the T. tricinctus pattern was later observed in T. matacus . Here, we assessed the potential use of the morphology of the cephalic shield as a species diagnostic trait and individual natural mark in three-banded armadillos by quantifying their patterns in museum ( n  = 71) and field ( n  = 82) specimens. In total, 93% of T. matacus and 88% of T. tricinctus specimens presented the respective species’ character states. All specimens could be individualized based on a visual comparison of their cephalic shields. Our findings show that the morphology of cephalic shields is a species diagnostic trait and an individual natural mark in three-banded armadillos. Therefore, we add an accessible character for species diagnosis in Tolypeutes and provide an alternative to artificial marks that presents virtually no associated cost and damage to animal welfare and can be reliably applied in ecological and participatory science projects.

Information about opossums in Honduras has been scarce. Although there have been sporadic records of species, it was not clear which and how many species were occurring in the country because of taxonomic discussions and the group being understudied. Over the years, different authors studying mammals in Honduras have accepted or rejected the occurrence of some didelphid species. Herein we discuss the species of opossums occurring for Honduras based on taxonomic and distribution changes according to Voss, R.S. and Jansa, S.A. At the beginning of the 20th century Crocidura cantabra was described based on one specimen from Basque Provinces, North of Spain. Later, some authors considered it a junior synonym of Crocidura suaveolens , without any data to support this statement, so the eight existing specimens were registered as records of that species. Our objective was to clarify the taxonomic status of C. cantabra . Since DNA could not be obtained from the existing specimens and the coloration was originally poorly described, an attempt was made to make an assignment based on the original biometric data of two individuals, the only ones identified by Cabrera for which there is biometric information: the holotype and a specimen from Colindres, Cantabria. The body measurements were surely altered by conservation techniques, rendering any identification uncertain, whereas the skull biometry assigns the specimens to C. russula . We propose that C. cantabra should be treated as junior synonym of Crocidura russula .
