Rodent biogeographic studies are disproportionately scarce in Iran, however, they are an ideal system to understand drivers of biodiversity distributions in the country. The aims of the present research are to determine (i) the pattern of rodent richness across the country, (ii) quantify their elevational distribution patterns, and (iii) explore the underlying mechanisms. To reach these goals, an updated species list was compiled based on the latest taxonomic revisions, published until December 2021. We mapped all 76 rodent species distributions to develop the first map of rodent richness in Iran. We furthermore investigated their elevational distribution patterns in the following four geographic regions based on 100 m intervals; the Zagros Mountains, north of Alborz Mountains, south of Alborz and Kopet-Dagh mountains, and central and east mountains. North-east of Iran, Zagros Mountains, Alborz Mountains, and northwestern of Iran showed the highest richness and were identified as biodiversity hotspots of rodents in the country. This study highlights the importance of past climate change as the key driver of rodent richness in Iran. We showed that rodents’ elevational distribution patterns differ among geographic regions. Areas and elevational zones with the highest species richness should be prioritized for the conservation planning of rodents in Iran.

The bat fauna from the extreme north of Chile is poorly known, principally due to a lack of dedicated surveys. To better assess the diversity of bats there, we conducted acoustic surveys at Arica city and three coastal valleys (Azapa, Lluta and Camarones) in the Arica and Parinacota region, Chile. We obtained 82 acoustic records of the Peale’s free-tailed bat ( Nyctinomops aurispinosus ) in nine sites within the region. This species had not been previously documented in Chile but was known from adjacent Tacna province, Peru. Echolocation calls of N. aurispinosus can be distinguished from other molossid bat species occurring in the area by its lower frequency range. Our data suggest a wide distribution of N. aurispinosus across the coastal valleys of the Arica and Parinacota region, where they were active in both natural and anthropized habitats. This southernmost record of N. aurispinosus for the Pacific coast, extends its known range ca. 150 km southward, and increases up to 15 the number of bat species in Chile.

The lesser horseshoe bat has a broad distribution in warm temperate regions of Europe and Western Asia, and a patchy distribution in Africa. Common in the north-western part of North Africa, the species is missing more to the east. Hereby we report the first record in Libya, considerably extending its known geographic range. Additionally, we performed a species distribution modelling (SDM) analysis to explore its potential distribution in North Africa. The final SDM depicted a relatively well-known distribution and predicted that the suitable bioclimatic areas for this species are essentially found within the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome.

We expanded the geographical distribution of Ateles marginatus and Chiropotes albinasus to the Amazonia-Cerrado ecotone region. Visual records were made while surveying through linear transections in a forest area associated with two important rivers that form the Xingu River in the central region of Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Females were observed with infants in the dry and rainy seasons. Other primate species locally recorded are Alouatta caraya , Mico emiliae , Plecturocebus vieirai , and Sapajus libidinosus . Our records demonstrate the importance of continuous forest areas in maintaining the primate community in landscapes modified by agribusiness activities.

We report for the first time the long-tailed nesokia rat, Nesokia bunnii , in Iran. A single female of this rodent killed by a stray dog in the Hoveyzeh marshes was identified as Nesokia bunnii according to its external and craniodental characteristics. With its four pairs of nipples, the collected specimen did not deviate from the condition is seen in Nesokia indica and the genus Bandicota . Here, we provide the first observations on the natural history of this elusive animal. Examination of the stomach contents of the specimen retrieved green plant material. The animal was killed in a marshy site with small pools scattered all around. The entrance to a burrow which was found on the spot was sheltered by dense reed Phragmites australis. We could not confirm an earlier report that N. bunnii constructs floating nests. This record extends the known distribution range of N. bunnii eastwards into the Khuzestan Province, Southwest of Iran.

Notwithstanding the very small size of this felid, Leopardus guigna is considered a top predator within its habitat. Its diet consists of small mammals, birds and reptiles, according to the available literature, but its predatory behaviour has rarely been observed directly. Here we report the first record of L. guigna preying upon Pudu puda in southern Chile. Photographic material has been obtained in a citizen science project and indicates a significant expansion of the cat’s prey size range. It also adds valuable knowledge to conservation efforts focusing on the near threatened cervid.

Bat predator-prey interactions are still poorly known. Following this diagnosis, this work aims to report an event of opportunistic predation of silky short-tailed bat ( Carollia brevicauda ) by Long-furred woolly mouse opossum ( Marmosa demerarae ) in the Brazilian Amazon. The event took place on April 10, 2021, in a cocoa plantation. The bat individual that was preyed upon was an inactive adult female trapped in a mist net, approximately 40 cm from the ground. The predation of bats that are trapped in mist nets reinforces the idea of opportunistic predation and may explain the consumption of a vertebrate by an insectivorous marsupial.

Nest boxes and nest tubes are widely used to survey and monitor hazel dormice ( Muscardinus avellanarius ). A two-year study was conducted in order to compare the performance of the two devices. In one year hazel dormice clearly preferred nest tubes over nest boxes but preferred nest boxes over nest tubes in the other year. The preference for one or other device was mainly influenced by competition for nest boxes with Apodemus mice, which preferred nest boxes over nest tubes during one year when they were abundant. This has to be considered when comparing performance of methods.

In this study, we report for the first time the use of the American oil palm ( Elaeis oleifera ) as roost by the Neotropical Pacific tent-making bat ( Uroderma convexum ). Palms with tent roosts consisting of modified leaves were found within the semi-deciduous lowland rainforest in Panama. We present detailed information on a new style of leaf modifications and compare these to tent architectures in other palm species used by U. convexum .

In Argentina, wild pigs ( Sus scrofa ) are represented by wild boars and feral pigs. These populations inhabit a wide territory due to natural dispersion and human translocation. Previous studies in other countries have detected crossbreeding between the different morphotypes, even with domestic pigs. This crossing can lead to introgression of improved traits in the wild population, which would increase the invasive potential and, therefore, the damage to native ecosystems. The aim of this work was to obtain the patterns of genetic variability throughout its current distribution in Argentina, in order to elucidate genetic relationships between wild boar and feral pig populations through the molecular marker control region. For this purpose, studies of genetic variability and population structure were carried out using 377 sequences from Argentinian wild pigs. The high values of haplotype and nucleotide diversity ( Hd  = 0.866 and π  = 0.00959) obtained, and the cluster analyses (SAMOVA and BAPS) could indicate mixing between wild pigs and/or with domestic pigs. The star-like shapes observed in the haplotype network and neutral tests (Fu’s Fs and Tajima’s D) are consistent with a recent population expansion, supporting previous reports that indicate crossbreeding increases invasive potential.

Gorals are distributed in varied ranges of habitats in South and South–East Asia, and the existence of the number of species in the genus Naemorhedus has been greatly debated from time to time. A school of thought supports the presence of three species, while a recent genetic study recognizes five species of goral throughout their distribution range. However, the unavailability of DNA sequences of gorals from India left a gap in understanding the species occurrence in Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). We revisited goral taxonomy by sequencing mitochondrial Cytochrome  b  gene (∼404 bp) and control region (∼225 bp) of 75 Himalayan gorals from Western and Central Himalayas in India. Based on various species delineating methods, we suggest that Himalayan goral ( N. goral ) is a highly diverged species and possibly exists into two subspecies, i.e. N. g. bedfordi in Western Himalayas and N. g. goral in the Central Himalayas. We validate the presence of plausibly six species of gorals across the distribution and recognize N. griseus and N. goral are two distinct species considering the observed discrepancy in the available sequences. We also propose that goral populations distributed in Western and Central Himalayas may be considered as two evolutionary significant units (ESUs). This recognition will bring concentrated efforts in further exploring the natural populations and ecological information required for prioritizing conservation and management of Himalayan goral.

Deer mice (genus Peromyscus ) are among the commonest small mammals in the Nearctic zoogeographic region. Nevertheless, systematic relationships are only partially settled and numerous taxonomic questions await resolution. For instance, researchers have found that some members of the Peromyscus truei species group contain high levels of genetic divergence that could indicate the presence of cryptic species. We analyzed the systematics and phylogenetic relationships of the P. truei group using new and previously published mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences. Our analyses verify several earlier conclusions, but we also detected new clades that deserve recognition. Considering their mitochondrial distinctiveness, allopatric ranges, and previously reported molecular, biochemical, chromosomal, morphological, and ecological differences, we elevate three previously described taxa to species. We support the recognition of two subgroupings. The first comprises P. gratus , P. truei , and possibly P. cf. martirensis and P. cf.  zapotecae . The second contains to P. amplus , P. attwateri , P. collinus , P. difficilis , P. felipensis , P. laceianus , P. nasutus , P. ochraventer , and P. pectoralis. Placement of P. bullatus will likely remain unknown until genetic data are available. Further research could improve our understanding of the evolutionary history of Peromyscus , but in some cases taxonomic issues must be resolved first.

Based on previously published molecular (mitochondrial) and herein provided morphological (qualitative and quantitative data) evidence, we describe a new species of leaf-eared mouse of the genus Phyllotis . The new species is morphometrically distinct when compared with other phylogenetically or geographically close species of Phyllotis , showing several quantitative differences in their external and craniodental characters (e.g., proportionally broader nasals and interorbital region, and proportionally smaller tympanic bullae). The new species is endemic to central Argentina, occurring on rocky grasslands at elevations of 650–2,800 m a.s.l. This is the only species of Phyllotis inhabiting the Central Sierras, a mountain system of medium elevation, isolated from the Andes by low elevation arid and semiarid environments.
