The active screen plasma nitrocarburizing (ASPNC) technology is an extension of the ASPN method in that carbon-bearing gases such as CH 4 are admixed to the N 2 -H 2 process gas. Besides process gas composition and working pressure, a bias power applied to the component surface is an important parameter in the nitrocarburizing process governing the competing uptake between nitrogen and carbon on the metallic surface. A variation of the bias power during the treatment provides the possibility of the dynamic control of both the nitriding and the carburizing potential without change of process gas composition. A two-stage process was implemented to improve the quality of the compound layer. The application of advanced in-situ and non-intrusive spectroscopic method of laser absorption spectroscopy in the mid infrared spectral range provides the valuable information about the plasma chemical reactions in the afterglow plasma, supplying the absolute concentrations of stable and transient molecular species monitored direct in process. The amount of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) measured in-situ by QCLAS diagnostics was found to be a reliable parameter to control the carburizing potential of the nitrocarburizing atmosphere.

The tribological behaviour of work roll materials is a key issue during hot rolling process of metals. The characteristics of the material (hardness and wear resistance) at elevated temperatures are of great interest for many industrial applications. The study investigates the mechanical properties and the sliding wear behaviour of HS 6-5-3-5 (HSS) high-speed tool steel, which is a common work roll material of the intermediate and finishing stands of hot rolling manufacturing lines. Experimental analysis focuses on the mechanical properties of steel HS 6-5-3-5 at elevated temperatures and on the microstructural surface changes of this material during metallic sliding wear. The results give an overview about the absolute hardness value of HS 6-5-3-5 at elevated temperatures and its evolution at constant operating temperatures. To conclude interdependencies between mechanical properties, microstructure and wear behaviour at elevated temperatures, results are discussed and connected with wear investigations. Findings reveal that high temperature wear behaviour is mainly dependent on the formation of a tribochemical wear layer on the wear bodies' surfaces. Layers suppress direct metallic contact and change the characteristics of the tribological system. Discussed issues of high temperature sliding wear are the formation and stability of tribochemical wear layers, their connection to and support by the bulk material, as well as the fracturing and damage of the layer-bulk-material compound.

Kurzfassung Die Beurteilung der Leistungsfähigkeit von nichtwassermischbaren Kühlschmierstoffen erfolgt im Labor mittels gängiger tribologischer Methoden, wie unter anderem mit dem Verschleißtest nach Brugger oder dem Tapping-Torque-Test. Die Ergebnisse können bislang nicht eindeutig auf Fertigungsprozesse speziell im Bereich Umformen und geometrisch bestimmter Zerspanung, wie Bohren und Reiben, übertragen werden. Das ist damit zu begründen, dass Fertigungsverfahren sich grundlegend in ihren Prozessgrößen von Laborbeanspruchungen unterscheiden. Zusätzlich spielen auch die Werkstoffe, Werkzeuge und Umweltfaktoren eine entscheidende Rolle. Die hier vorgestellten Untersuchungen zeigen, dass eine Übertragung der im Labor ermittelten Leistungsfähigkeit von Kühlschmierstoffen auf bestimmte Verfahren wie z. B. das Gewindeformen bedingt möglich ist, wenn der identische Werkstoff (100Cr6) verwendet wird. Beim Reiben konnte bezüglich der Additivpaarung Polysulfid und überbasischem Natriumsulfonat nachgewiesen werden, dass die Prozesstemperatur und -kräfte von der verwendeten Zusammensetzung abhängig sind, sodass ein steigender Anteil an Polysulfid 40 im Kühlschmierstoff das Reiben begünstigt.

WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni thermal spray coatings was applied on the surface of low carbon steel (AISI 1018) using high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process. The base metal, coating powder and coated materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscope. Water-jet erosion test (WJET) was used to test the mass loss of the samples with different process parameters such as impingement angle, water jet velocity, erodent discharge, and stand-off distance. As results lower mass loss was observed for the selected process parameters. Pitting corrosion test reveals that better corrosion resistance can be achieved for the low carbon steels by WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni powder coating.

Kurzfassung Bei der Produktion von Walzstahlplatten spielt die Qualitätskontrolle eine bedeutende Rolle. Die Temperaturverteilung einer Platte wird mit einem Messgerät aufgezeichnet und in einem rechteckigen Feld abgespeichert. Erforderlich ist eine Bewertung der Temperaturverteilung auf Homogenität in Echtzeit als wichtiger Bestandteil des Produktionsprozesses. Eine neue Methode, die Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA), wird dafür vorgeschlagen. Die gemessenen Temperaturen sind mit einer stochastischen Messtoleranz versehen. Trotzdem kann das rechteckige Temperaturfeld durch eine Folge von Niedrigrangmatrizen approximiert werden. Die Anzahl der dafür erforderlichen Iterationsschritte wird als Kriterium der Homogenität benutzt. Beispiele mit echten Messdaten aus der Stahlindustrie zeigen die Effizienz der ACA-Methode sowie deren Übereinstimmung mit der subjektiven Bewertung. Die Approximation der Temperaturverteilungen gestattet darüber hinaus eine signifikante Kompression der Ausgangsdaten und kann somit auch zu ihrer Archivierung fast ohne Informationsverlust benutzt werden.
