Objectives The present study aimed to evaluate the presence of any relationship between vitamin D and prognostic factors among patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among patients admitted from March to August 2020 in a referral hospital, Tehran, Iran. All patients aged 18–65 who had not any comorbidity participated in the study. The diagnosis of COVID-19 was established using the rRT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 detection. Then the incidence of lung involvement and biochemical markers including vitamin D level, c-reactive protein, D-dimer, lymphocyte count, platelet count, white blood cell count, and lactic acid dehydrogenase, were extracted through medical records. Results Altogether, 84 patients met our study criteria, and the information of 68 (80.9%) participants were collected. Among all 68 patients, 45 (66.2%) were male. The mean (SD) age of all participants was 52.4 (10.4) years old. Among 24 (35.2%) clients who died due to SARS-CoV-2, 20 (83.3%) patients were male (p=0.02). The mean (SD) of vitamin D level was 24.1 (13.6) ng/dL. No association between vitamin D level and prognostic factors, including CRP, lymphocyte count, D-dimer, LDH, and HRCT scan score, was observed. Also, the vitamin D level of the dead patients was not significantly different from that of the treated patients. Conclusions Our findings indicated no significant relationship between vitamin D level and prognostic factors or outcomes of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Objectives The association between serum Vitamin D (Vit. D) and mood disorders in lipedema patients has not been investigated. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between serum Vit. D, depression and anxiety risk. Methods A cross-sectional cohort of lipedema patients were investigated by collecting the clinical and demographic data. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and the Hamilton of Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) were used to evaluating the risk of depression and anxiety. Serum concentrations of Vit. D were measured. The association between Vit. D levels and both HAM-A and HAM-D scores were statistically examined by bivariate and partial correlations. Results Forty lipedema patients were enrolled in this study. Around two-thirds of them had a higher depression or anxiety risk, and 77.5% were under the normal serum Vit. D levels. A significant and inverse correlation was observed between serum Vit. D levels and both HAM-D (r=−0.661, p<0.001), and HAM-A (r=−0.496, p=0.001) scores. This strong association was sustained after the statistical model adjusted for the main potential confounding factors (age, body mass index (BMI), disease duration, and lipedema stages). Additionally, serum Vit. D correlated significantly and inversely with BMI (r=−0.647, p<0.001). Moreover, BMI significantly correlated with HAM-D: r=0.560, p<0.001, and HAM-A: r=0.511, p=0.00. Conclusions This study suggests a strong correlation between Vit. D levels, depression scores, and anxiety scores in lipedema patients. Our results also demonstrate a strong and direct relationship between BMI, Vit. D levels, depression, and anxiety.

Objectives Visfatin is found in adipose tissue and is referred to as nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (Nampt). Visfatin has anti-apoptotic, proliferative, and metastatic properties and may mediate its effects via ERK and PI3K/Akt signaling. Studies have yet to determine whether inhibition of kinase signaling will suppress visfatin-induced liver cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine which signaling pathways visfatin may promote liver cancer progression. Methods HepG2 and SNU-449 liver cancer cells were exposed to visfatin with or without ERK or PI3K/Akt inhibitor, or both inhibitors combined. These processes that were assessed: proliferation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipogenesis, invasion, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP). Results Inhibition of PI3K/Akt and combination of inhibitors suppressed visfatin-induced viability. ERK inhibition in HepG2 cells decreased visfatin-induced proliferation. ERK inhibitor alone or in combination with PI3K inhibitors effectively suppressed MMP-9 secretion and invasion in liver cancer cells. PI3K and ERK inhibition and PI3K inhibition alone blocked visfatin’s ROS production in SNU-449 cells. These results corresponded with a decrease in phosphorylated Akt and ERK, β-catenin, and fatty acid synthase. Conclusions Akt and ERK inhibition differentially regulated physiological changes in liver cancer cells. Inhibition of Akt and ERK signaling pathways suppressed visfatin-induced invasion, viability, MMP-9 activation, and ROS production.

Objectives The male-factor subfertility was reported to be 30% globally; thus, the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedure was implemented to improve the overall in vitro fertilization (IVF) rates. Nevertheless, at least 10% of fertilization failure still occurs. Concerning this issue, we explored the association of sperm concentration and motility with the quality of embryo development and pregnancy outcome in IVF-ICSI cycles. Methods Retrospective analysis of 109 couples with male factor were done over 14 months in a tertiary university hospital in Malaysia. The data were divided into four groups; Group I: normal sperm parameters, Group II: normal sperm concentration but reduced total sperm motility, Group III: reduced sperm concentration and motility, Group IV: reduced sperm concentration but normal sperm motility. Only fresh semen samples and fresh embryo transfers were included. The fertilization, cleavage rate, embryo quality and pregnancy outcome were assessed. Results Overall, group I had the highest oocytes yield and ICSI attempted; (10.12 + 6.50), whereas the lowest was in group IV; (7.00 + 2.82). Group II revealed the highest fertilization and cleavage rates; (54.14 + 25.36), (55.16 + 26.06), thus not surprisingly resulting in the highest number of good embryos and highest clinical pregnancy rates. The lowest cleavage and pregnancy rates were seen in group IV. However, all the outcomes were not statically significant (p>0.05). Conclusions Similar fertilization rate and comparable pregnancy outcome was seen among couples with normal and reduced sperm concentration and motility.

Objectives Who disrupts who? It is not clear what the interaction is between a high calorie diet (HCD) and adrenal axis activation in obesity. The goal was to assess the effect of two hypercaloric diets commercialized in Algeria on the hormonal and metabolic profile of the adrenal gland in rabbits. Methods Two classes of local male adult rabbits (n=16) and a finishing diet (FD) as a control for 15 weeks. Results It has been shown that HCD-received animals have developed visceral obesity, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance IR by dramatically increasing body weight, visceral fat tissue and adrenal weight, combined with elevated plasma levels of ACTH, cortisol, leptin and insulin. The HCD diet increased the levels of cortisol in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT), in peri-adrenal adipose tissue (PAAT), and decreased cortisol levels in the liver. HCD also causes the process of inflammatory fibrosis associated with the migration and spread of chromaffin cells in the adrenal gland. Conclusions This study gives new insights into how diet-induced obesity studied on local rabbits affects the biology of the adrenal gland. The correlation of these changes with paracrine connections between the chromaffin cell and glomerulosa indicates potential therapeutic methods for obese-related steroid hormone dysfunction.

Objectives Exercise can improve both health and mood. Some beneficial effects of exercise are attributed to endocrine status. This study aims to evaluate the effect of eight weeks of basketball training on melatonin, serotonin, and hematologic parameters in basketball players. Methods The experimental group was selected form 34 healthy young boys, aged between 13 and 16 years old. The participants were randomly assigned to the control group (n=17) and the exercise group (n=17). The exercise program consisted of 2 h/day aerobic activity of basketball training in 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Venous blood was taken on the day before experiment (pre-exercise) and on the day following the last exercise (post-exercise) and hormone levels were detected by ELISA. Results Serotonin and melatonin levels significantly increased in the post-exercise group compared to the other groups (p<0.05). Exercise caused increase in WBC, RBC, HCT and Hb levels (p<0.05) while did not alter PLT, MCH, and PCT levels (p>0.05). This study indicates that an eight weeks-long regular aerobic exercise increased melatonin and serotonin levels, and also altered some hematological parameters. Conclusions In conclusion, it is believed that improvement in levels of serotonin, melatonin, and hematological parameters after eight weeks of regular basketball training in basketball players could be attributed to beneficial effects of exercise. Investigation in other branches of sports and in different gender and age groups would make contribution into exercise physiology and training science.

Objectives The role of air bubbles in bracketing the embryo-containing medium in inner catheter during embryo transfer (ET) has already been established. However, the role of air bubbles in outer catheter (OC) during implantation is yet to be determined. This study aimed to compare the implantation rates between women who have undergone ET with or without ASP (Vitrolife ® ; Sweden), a medium use for oocyte retrieval and rinsing in OC embryo catheter. The purpose of introducing the ASP medium to the OC was to eliminate air bubbles in that space during implantation. Methods A total of 312 women were randomly divided into two groups with 156 participants each group. In Group A, ASP medium was used during ET, whereas in Group B, no ASP medium was utilized. Positive implantation was defined as serum beta-hCG level >5 mIU/mL taken on the 7th day following ET. Results The average age of the majority of the participants was 30–39 years and had at least 4–5 years of subfertility. The unexplained subfertility was the prominent cause of ET failure in both groups. In most of the participants in both groups, ET was done using fresh embryo cycles with good to excellent embryo grades. After the ASP medium was manipulated in the OC in both groups, the positive implantation rate was not different in both groups (p>0.05). Conclusions The elimination of air bubbles in OC by using the ASP medium during ET did not confer an additional benefit nor exert a negative impact on implantation rate.

Objectives Stem cell treatment is based on Melatonin which is crucial for lots of pathological and physiological pathways. Our aim is determining the most appropriate dose of melatonin affecting the rat adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells. Methods Stem cells were isolated from male rat adipose tissue. Differentiation and characterization experiments were performed. Cell viability analyses in stem cells were used the XTT [2,3-Bis-(2-methoxy-4-Nitro-5-Sulfophenyl)-2H-Tetrazolium-5-Carboxanilide] assay. After 24 h incubation, different concentrations (0.5, 1, 5, 10, 50 µM) of extract were treated to the stem cells for 24 h, 48 and 72 h considering time and dose dependent manner. Total antioxidant status (TAS) and the total oxidant status (TOS) in control cells and melatonin treated cells (5, 10 µM) were determined Rel Assay commercial kits. Results In 24 h, melatonin increased cell viability in all groups. When we evaluate the effect of melatonin in 48 h, the most proliferation increase was seen at 5, 10 µM doses. When the total oxidant activity melatonin was found to be significantly lower in 5 and 10 µM dose groups of melatonin. Conclusions Melatonin increases the survivor of stem cells and the most effective dose is 5 and 10 µM. The reduction of the oxidative stress index as a result of treating melatonin to mesenchymal stem cells showed that melatonin is a powerful antioxidant for stem cells.

Objectives To determine the significance of tumour PTEN protein expression in endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC) and it is correlation with tumour characteristics. Methods A total of 30 eligible archived paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from 61 EEC cases (January 2015–December 2017) were retrieved from the Histopathology Laboratory in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) following institutional ethic approval. For PTEN protein detection, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining was performed and the data was correlated with clinicopathologic parameters. Results Fourteen samples (46.7%) showed positive PTEN protein expression, while 16 (53.3%) were negative. The mean age was 62.00 ± 9.51 years old, while the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 27.28 ± 7.16 kg/m 2 . There was no significant difference between age (p=0.27, 95% CI: −10.98 to 3.21) and BMI (p=0.67, 95% CI: −4.30 to 6.58) with PTEN protein expression. There were significant correlation between PTEN protein expression with myometrial invasion (p=0.010), but not with lymphovascular space invasion (p=0.743), grade (p=0.532), stage (p=0.733) and CA-125 level (p=0.47). The higher stage correlates with the presence of LVSI (p=0.002). PTEN positive associated with longer disease-free-interval (p=0.025), but not improving the overall survival (p=0.38) Conclusions Positive PTEN protein expression correlates with less myometrial invasion.

Objectives Type 1 diabetes is one of the most important causes of microvascular complications such as nephropathy. On other hand, the use of herbal medicines is more affordable and has fewer side effects. Therefore, this study was conducted to assessment the therapeutic effect of saffron in diabetic nephropathy by regulating the expression of CTGF and RAGE genes as well as oxidative stress in rats with type 1 diabetes. Methods In this study, we used 24 Wistar rats in four groups. To induce diabetes, we used a 55 mg/kg.bw dose of streptozotocin intraperitoneally. Type 1 diabetic rats were administered saffron (20 and 40 mg/kg/day) by gavage once daily for 42 days. Finally, serum urea, creatinine, albumin and SOD, MDA levels in kidney tissue were measured using spectrophotometric methods and CTGF and RAGE gene expression in kidney tissue was measured using real-time PCR method. Results Diabetes significantly increases serum FBG, urea, creatinine and decreases albumin (p<0.001). AS well as increased the CTGF and RAGE genes expression, MDA level and decreased the SOD activity in the kidney tissue (p<0.001). Serum urea, creatinine, albumin was significantly ameliorated by saffron (p<0.001). It was shown the saffron significantly decrease the kidney expression CTGF and RAGE genes and MDA level and increased the SOD activity (p<0.001). Also, it was found that the beneficial effects of the saffron were dose-dependent (p<0.05). Conclusions The results of this study suggest that saffron as an adjunct therapy may prevent development and treatment of diabetic nephropathy by regulating the expression of the CTGF and RAGE genes and oxidative stress.

Objectives As a systemic inflammatory disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the population and there is no specific diagnostic marker in laboratory tests. The purpose of the study was to determine whether serum neopterin and pentraxin 3 (PTX3) levels may be a marker of increased inflammation in RA patients. Materials and methods The study were consist of 30 RA patients and 30 healthy controls who were admitted to the department of rheumatology. Blood specimens were taken from both group, and the levels of neopterin were analyzed by chromatography method (HPLC) and the PTX 3 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All data and demographic characteristics of participants were also recorded. Results Serum neopterin and PTX 3 levels of the patient group (25.99 ± 7.24 ng/mL and 4.19 ± 1.01 ng/dL, respectively) was higher than the control group (9.55 ± 0.74 ng/mL and 2.23 ± 0.39 ng/dL, respectively). These results were remarkable significant (p<0.01). No statistically significant correlation was found between age-PTX 3, age-neopterin and PTX 3-neopterin parameters in the patient group. In the control group, a significant negative correlation was found between age and PTX 3 (p<0.05), and a positive correlation between neopterin and PTX 3. Conclusions Consequently, the serum neopterin and PTX 3 levels were higher in RA patients as compared to the healthy individuals. Our study suggest that there is a relation between neopterin and PTX 3 levels with RA patients. These findings suggest that neopterin and PTX 3 are important markers in the monitoring of RA disease.

Objectives To understand the dynamics of infectivity of COVID-19 and allay the fear and anxiety associated with it in healthcare workers and the society. Case presentation Three individuals accompanied their pediatric patients in the COVID ward but did not develop infection. Information about their knowledge and perspective about the disease and the protective measures undertaken by them during their stay in the hospital was gathered by administering a questionnaire 14 days after discharge. Conclusions It was observed that use of proper precautionary measures like wearing a mask and regular hand sanitization helped in prevention from COVID-19 infection even after having close contact with confirmed cases. Such facts/observation will help in sensitizing the public about COVID-19 and eliminate panic in the society.

Objectives Endometrial cancer is the sixth most common cancer among women and recurrence of after 10 years is extremely rare. Case presentation We reported a comprehensive review of histopathology, investigations and treatment regarding a woman with distant recurrence of endometrial cancer to rectus abdominis muscle after 23 years from the primary surgery. Previous published literatures of similar case were included into the review analysis. A total of 11 similar cases had been reported. Overall, 9 (81.8%) cases were stage 1 disease and only 2 cases were classified as stage II disease. The majority, 6 (54.5%) cases were endometrial adenocarcinoma. Majority of the cases shared the similarity of low grade endometrial cancer with positive oestrogen receptor immunophynetype. Conclusions Thus, the phenomenon of ‘cell dormancy’ was hypothesized to explain the mechanism of late recurrence for these cases.

COVID-19 is a global emergency with over 10 million cases and over 500, 000 deaths worldwide. The SARS CoV-2 is a RNA virus belonging to the family coronaviridae. It has high infectivity. The manifestations of the disease range from asymptomatic or mild symptoms to severe pneumonia and ARDS. The CT scan of lung shows consolidation and “Ground Glass Opacities”. The persons with other comorbidities are considered to be at a higher rate of acquiring the infection. Asthma and other allergies have not been identified as major risk factors for COVID-19 as the number of asthmatic patients having COVID-19 is not high enough for it to be considered so. The occurrence of COVID-19 in COPD patients can be related with smoking. The ACE-2 expression in such patients was considerably high. The relation between COVID-19 and Tuberculosis can also be reflected in terms of the stigma associated with diagnosis and treatment of such diseases in some communities, eventually increasing the chances of people's reluctance to seek medical help. Cancer patients are usually more susceptible to infections. Lung cancer is no different. Additionally, lung cancer also has strong association with smoking further increasing the risk. The risk of getting infection and its severity is high for autoimmune disorders as well as fungal infections. Currently there is no definite treatment of COVID-19. However, some of the currently used modalities are hydroxychloroquine and antiviral drugs.

Leukaemia is a haematological malignancy originated from the bone marrow. Studies have shown that shift work could disrupt the melatonin secretion and eventually increase leukaemia incidence risk. Melatonin, a pineal hormone, has shown promising oncostatic properties on a wide range of cancers, including leukaemia. We first reviewed the relationship between shift work and the incidence rate of leukaemia and then discussed the role of melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) and their functions in leukaemia. Moreover, the connection between inflammation and leukaemia, and melatonin-induced anti-leukaemia mechanisms including anti-proliferation, apoptosis induction and immunomodulation are comprehensively discussed. Apart from that, the synergistic effects of melatonin with other anticancer compounds are also included. In short, this review article has compiled the evidence of anti-leukaemia properties displayed by melatonin and discuss its potential to act as adjunct for anti-leukaemia treatment. This review may serve as a reference for future studies or experimental research to explore the possibility of melatonin serving as a novel therapeutic agent for leukaemia.
