The Egyptian Tale of the Two Brothers , preserved in the Papyrus d'Orbiney, dates back to the 19th dynasty. It has often been perceived as a folk tale and has been interpreted as such. However, because of its setting in divine and royal spheres, folklorists such as Jan de Vries and Karel Horálek doubted that the text can be called an early folk tale. These doubts were justified, as the present study of the historical facts is now able to show from an Egyptiological point of view. In fact, the text is a document by the royal heir and later king Sethos II., who at a time of inner crisis probably felt the need to account for the descent of the Ramesside monarchs from the Canaanite weather god Baal, who Egyptians equalled to the indigenous weather god Seth. The alien god of the dynasty was to be adapted to the traditionial Egyptian universe by means of a subtly constructed mythological tale. This explains the many references of the text to Eyptian religion und to the Canaanite gods. Résumé Le conte égyptien des deux frères, préservé dans le Papyrus d'Orbiney, date de la XIXe dynastie. Souvent conçu comme un conte, il a par conséquent été interprété comme tel. Etant donné que l'action se déroule dans la sphère des dieux et de la royauté, des folkloristes comme Jan de Vries et Karel Horálek ont toutefois mis en doute que le texte puisse être appelé un conte ancien. Ces doutes étaient justifiés, comme la présente étude du contexte historique pourra démontrer, cette fois-ci d'un point de vue égyptiologique. Le texte est en fait un document du prince héritier, qui dans la suite sera le roi Sethos II, et qui, dans une époque de crise intérieure, se voyait probablement obligé de démontrer que les rois ramessides étaient des descendants de Baal, dieu canaanéen de l'orage et de la pluie, qui en Egypte était considéré comme un équivalent du dieu indigène Seth. Dans le cadre d'un conte mythologique subtil, on visait à intégrer ce nouveau dieu de la dynastie, dieu aux traits étrangers, dans l'univers égyptien traditionnel, ce qui explique les multiples rapports du texte à la religion égyptienne et au monde des dieux canaanéens.

The European narrative motif of the sacrificing friendship between two men can be traced from antiquity until at least the 18th century. There are several special narrative types which are analyzed here on the basis of concrete examples. Beginning with Martin Montanus' Wegkürzer , this paper demonstrates that poets of practically all time periods were fascinated by the same proof of friendship in the face of death of one of them. This narrative tradition illustrates how much common assumptions about literary-historical periods might have been rather artificial. Résumé Le motif narratif européen de l'amitié entre deux hommes se laisse tracer de l'Antiquité jusqu'au dix-huitième siècle. Plusieurs types narratifs existent qui sont analysés ici. En partant du Wegkürzer de Martin Montanus, je démontre que des poètes de presque toutes les époques etaient fascinés par l'épreuve de l'amitié en face de la mort. Cette tradition narrative met en lumière que les assomptions sur les périodes littéraires sont artificielles.

The field of this research is a small island in the Dodecanese, at the south-east of the Aegean Sea, (re)populated three centuries ago. Part of the Greek territory since 1948, it has been most probably repopulated at a time when it still belonged to the Ottoman empire and before it came under Italian rule. A rich oral tradition of local legends reflects a homogeneous and uninterrupted history, rooted in time and space. Three great thematical cycles could be found: 1) mythology of the origins and genealogies; 2) miracles and hierophanies; 3) treasures and topography of the island. This approach aims at demonstrating how these narratives contribute to the development of a collective identity among today's inhabitants. Zusammenfassung Eine kleine Insel des Dodekanes, im Südosten der Ägäis, die seit drei Jahrhunderten wieder bevölkert ist, ist Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung. Die Insel gehört seit 1948 zu Griechenland und wurde wohl noch unter den Osmanen wieder bevölkert, vor der Zeit der italienischen Verwaltung. Eine an Lokalsagen reiche Überlieferung spiegelt eine homogene, ununterbrochene, in Raum und Zeit verwurzelte Geschichte wider. Drei große thematische Zyklen lassen sich feststellen: 1) eine Mythologie der Ursprünge und Genealogien; 2) Wunder und Hierophanien; 3) Schätze und Topographie der Insel. Es soll gezeigt werden, wie diese Erzählungen zur Entstehung einer kollektiven Identität bei den heutigen Bewohnern der Insel beitragen.

The mole plays a rather prominent role in the ‘collective bestiary’; it appears in many genres of traditional narrative: e.g., aetiological tales, fables, exempla, emblems, proverbs, and in children's literature. It is a subterranean, chthonic, blind animal which appears as a challenger of the sun, punished for its hybris; as a noxious, burrowing animal and subversive agitator; a builder of labyrinthine tunnels and mounds; a base, crude, unclean, pagan and avaricious animal; a creature of ecological symbolism. The attitudes towards the mole are manifold: there is, e.g., the relentlessness of the aetiological tale; an exegetical endeavour to ennoble the mole by attributing to it magical and healing properties which have no real correspondence in myth; the compensations and consolations of children's literature where it is represented as a symbol of new beginnings and enchantment. Résumé La taupe, qui occupe une place assez prominente dans le 〈 bestiaire collectif 〉, apparaît dans beaucoup de genres narratifs traditionnels : entre autres, le conte étiologique, la fable, l'exemple, l'emblème, le proverbe, mais aussi dans la littérature pour enfants. Animal souterrain, chthonique et aveugle, la taupe est représentée comme animal puni pour avoir défié le soleil ; animal nuisible et fouisseur, agitateur subversif ; constructeur des galeries labyrinthiques et de monticules ; animal vil, brut, impur, païen et avide ; être de symbolisme écologique. Les attitudes envers la taupe sont nombreuses : parmi elles figurent, par exemple, l'inexorabilité des contes étiologiques ; une tendance exégétique d'ennoblir un animal bas en lui attribuant des propriétés magiques et curatives qui ne correspondent pas à la représentation des mythes ; les compensations et consolations de la littérature pour enfants où elle devient un animal symbolique de nouvelles orientations et de l'enchantement.

The margins of a Georgian manuscript (approx. 1160) contain illustrations of supernatural beings. This kind of drawings is not commonly found in Georgian theological manuscripts. The atypical pictures in this dogmatic-ascetic work correspond to fairy-tale figures. An examination of the Georgian sources shows that although Christian Orthodox belief played a significant role in Georgian folk tradition, it did not influence all genres of folklore and some forms of fairy tales contain no Christian messages at all. Résumé Les marges d'un manuscrit géorgien (environ 1160) contiennent des miniatures représentant des êtres fabuleux qui figurent également dans les contes populaires géorgiens. Ces dessins sont atypiques des manuscrits théologiques de la Géorgie et ne correspondent pas aux écrits dogmatiques et ascétiques. Après avoir étudié les sources, nous constatons que – bien que la croyance orthodoxe ait joué un rôle important dans les traditions populaires géorgiennes – il existe certains types de poésie populaire qui ne sont pas influencés par la religion et qui n'ont aucune signification chrétienne.

Many critics have commented on how Milton's masque differs from the general themes and plottings of the masques of his time. The present essay suggests that this was in part due to his players and audience (members of the Earl of Bridgewater's young family) and to Milton's use of fairy-tale morality and motivation to spin a tale appropriate both to beginners (the Earl's actor-children) and new beginnings (the commencement of the Earl's residence at Ludlow Castle). Résumé Beaucoup de critiques ont remarqué la différence entre le 〈 masque 〉 de Milton et les sujets et contenus des 〈 masques 〉 contemporains. Le présent article suggère que ceci est dû en partie à ses joueurs et son public (les membres de la jeune famille du comte de Bridgewater), à l'usage que fait Milton de la morale du conte ainsi qu'à son intention de composer un conte qui convient à des débutants (les enfants du comte qui se produirent comme acteurs) aussi bien qu'à des débuts (commencement de la résidence du comte à Ludlow Castle). Zusammenfassung Viele Kritiker haben auf die Unterschiede zwischen Miltons Maskenspiel und den üblichen Themen und Inhalten der Maskenspiele seiner Zeit hingewiesen. Der vorliegende Aufsatz bringt dafür mehrere Gründe vor: die Schauspieler und ihr Publikum (Mitglieder der jungen Familie des Earl of Bridgewater), Miltons Gebrauch der Märchenmoral sowie seine Intention, ein Stück für Anfänger (die Kinder des Grafen, die in dem Stück auftraten) und Anfänge (den Einzug des Grafen auf Schloß Ludlow) zu schreiben.

The Grimms' Snow White tale is a favorite text for scholars of literature since it can be used for a myriad of socio-cultural analyses. In particular, the relationship between mother and daughter, and Snow White's initiation into the life of a grown-up woman have often been commented upon. What has been neglected so far is an analysis of the fact that Snow White is noble by birth yet functions as an ideal of Bourgeois womanhood. This study focuses on the aspect of the bourgeoisification of Snow White and what this means for the reader. Résumé Le conte de Blanche-Neige par les frères Grimm compte parmi les textes favoris des chercheurs en littérature car il peut être utilisé pour des analyses socio-culturelles les plus diverses. Le rapport entre mère et fille et le passage de Blanche-Neige à l'état de femme a fait l'objet de nombreux commentaires. Ce qui a été négligé jusqu'ici est le fait qu'en dépit de sa naissance noble, Blanche-Neige fonctionne comme un idéal de féminité bourgeoise. Le présent article s'intéresse à la transformation du personnage de Blanche-Neige en héroïne bourgeoise et aux implications qui en découlent pour lecteurs et lectrices.

Up to now, editors of modern legend collections have rarely given evidence about the texts withheld to their readers. The present article serves the author to overcome this deficit, as far as his own collections are concerned, by presenting summaries of texts from his archive which he had deemed unsuitable for popular book editions. Résumé Jusqu'à présent, les éditeurs de collections de légendes modernes ont rarement fourni des informations sur leurs textes inédits. L'auteur se sert du présent article pour combler cette lacune en ce qui concerne ses propres collections, en présentant de ses archives des abrégés de textes qu'il avait jugés impropres à la publication dans des anthologies populaires.

Folkloriste, chercheur scientifique, académicien hongrois de la Roumanie, József Faragó est né à Brassó (Braşov, Roumanie), le 2 février 1922. Après des études élémentaires (Braşov) et le baccalauréat (Sepsiszentgyörgy, Sfântu Gheorghe), il a fréquenté les cours de l'Université Ferenc József (Cluj, Roumanie) et est devenu licencié ès lettres (langue et littérature hongroises, ethnographie) à l'Université Bolyai (Cluj). Sa dissertation sur les traditions de Noël, rédigée en 1945 sous la direction du professeur d'ethnographie Béla Gunda, n'a été publiée qu'en 2001 ( Uzoni betlehemes 1942-ben és 1943-ban ). Établi définitivement à Cluj, József Faragó y a enseigné pendant quelques années le folklore à la chaire de littérature hongroise. De 1950 jusqu'à 1985, il était chercheur scientifique, puis chercheur principal du département de Cluj de l'Institut de folklore de Bucarest (à présent: Archive de folklore de l'Académie roumaine).

Kristina Lindell wurde am 19. Juli 1928 als Tochter eines Eisenbahnbeamten geboren, und zwar im schwedischen Lund, wohin sie später nach verschiedenen Anstellungen zurückkehrte. Vorher wirkte sie als Volksschullehrerin in den Schären der Provinz Östergötland, wo sie an der Robbenjagd teilnahm und ein Schifferpatent erwarb, sowie in Malmö, von wo aus sie an der Universität Lund ihre umfassenden Sprachkenntnisse erwarb, später dann in Peking, wo sie als Übersetzerin an der Schwedischen Botschaft tätig war, und in Kopenhagen, wo sie ihre Kenntnisse der chinesischen Sprache vertiefte. Dort entstand ihr Interesse an den chinesischen Minoritätskulturen, besonders im Süden Chinas. In Kopenhagen studierte sie auch die Thai-Sprache und fuhr 1972 nach Thailand, um u.a. die nordthailändische Tempelarchitektur kennenzulernen. Hier machte sie die Bekanntschaft eines Repräsentanten der Khmu- oder Kammu-Minorität, Damrong Tayanin (sein Kammu-Name ist Kàm Ràw), eines außerordentlich begabten Erzählers von Mythen, Märchen, Sagen und fast allen anderen Gattungen der mündlichen Literatur dieses Volkes, der darüber hinaus die soziale, religiöse und materielle Kultur seines Volkes bis ins kleinste Detail kannte und (wie Kristina selbst) ein hochtalentierter Zeichner war. Damrong Tayanin, der heute als Angestellter der Universität in Lund lebt, sollte für den Rest ihres Lebens zu ihrem wissenschaftlichen Partner werden. Zusammen gaben sie mehrere hundert Texte heraus, hauptsächlich Märchen, und dazu etwa fünfzig Bücher und Artikel, oft mit Federzeichnungen illustriert.

Zu den Gestalten der Märchen aus Zentralasien gehören die Weißbärte – ehrwürdige, geachtete Greise, die dem Wohle ihrer Gemeinschaft dienen, in der ihr Wort und Rat hochgeschätzt sind. Walther Heissig, der das gesegnete Alter von fast 92 Jahren erreichen durfte und dazu so viel für die Kunde Zentralasiens bewirkt und geleistet hat, verdient mit vollem Recht diesen ehrenvollen Titel aus jenem Kulturkreis, dem seine Arbeit und seine Liebe galt.

Gerald Thomas died at his home in Torbay, Newfoundland, on September 6, 2005, after a short struggle with cancer. Born in Porthcawl, Wales, on December 29, 1940, he gained a B.A. (Hons.) in French and Romance Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1963, then taught for a year at a lycée in Marseilles, before taking up a position as lecturer in the Department of French at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. There he met the American folklorist, Herbert Halpert, who would found Memorial's Department of Folklore in 1968. One of Halpert's many specialities within narrative was the tall tale and he soon took advantage of his young colleague's language skills by inviting him to make a translation of a sixteeenth-century French text: La Nouvelle Fabrique des Excellents Traits de Verité by Philippe d'Alcripe, which contains 110 tall tales recorded as the chronicle of a Liars' Club. Halpert encouraged Thomas to take an M.A. in folklore, under his supervision, turning his translation into a thesis with annotations on the tales, and with a comprehensive discussion of the tall tale as a genre. Published in 1977 by Memorial University, in association with the American Folklore Society, this work remains unsurpassed as a treatment of the lying tale.

Anläßlich ihres 14. Kongresses zum Thema Folk Narrative Theories and Contemporary Practices hielt die International Society for Folk Narrative Research ihre Mitgliederversammlung am 31. Juli 2006 in der Universität von Tartu ab. Erschienen waren 62 stimmberechtigte Mitglieder. Nach dem Bericht der Präsidentin Galit Hasan-Rokem über ihre Amtsperiode erfolgte die Wahl des neuen Vorsitzenden. Vorgeschlagen wurde Ülo Valk (Tartu). Er wurde einstimming zum neuen Präsidenten gewählt.
