Abstract
The End of the World News (1982) consists of the Puma and Trotsky in New York narratives that both take place in the United States, mostly in New York City, and have a lot of Burgess’s own stock language yet again used to describe the people and places. The double-voiced discourse has elements of the American heteroglossia injected into the language but that is still orientated, though not nearly as much as Burgess’s two American Enderby novels, towards a monoglottal authorial vision. Although this piece is not as revealing as other chapters, without addressing the Americanness of this strange three-part, meant-for-Hollywood novel, this book’s approach and purpose would be incomplete.
