8 After America

Abstract

Looking at the diminished evidence of Burgess’s popularity in and travels to the United States, this chapter assesses the materials of the 1980s that show Burgess’s slow distancing from America and American culture. Despite being asked frequently to still visit, though not as much as in the 1970s, this chapter looks at Burgess’s waning views of the United States and his insistence that he was exhausted from the country and largely walking away from business there. Although travel to the United States never entirely ceased, there was a decided effort from Burgess to remove himself from America and statements by Burgess that the country had quickly forgotten him.
